One thing I have noticed in this thread is that the information on the USS Flagg has not been update/corrected. It is commonly said that the USS Flagg is a Nimitz Class aircraft carrier. This is incorrect. Greg Berndtson who designed the USS Flagg has stated that the USS Flagg is "loosely based on the USS Intrepid ... a modified Essex class carrier." I discussed this in detail on GIJOE Discussion on Facebook. If you look up pictures of the USS Intrepid you'll see the control towers are almost identical (there are even "kill marks" on the Intrepid. You'll also see similar cannons, radar, crane, etc. So the USS Flagg is not as big of a carrier as people have thought was suppose to be.

The Intrepid? Oh c'mon, that thing was decommissioned in '74. It doesn't even have the angled deck either, which came about with the Forrestal Class. The Flagg may be "loosely" based on the design, just like every new class of carrier is loosely based on its predecessor, but the Flagg is not of the Essex class.

But the Intrepid does have an angled deck, it was modified in the 1950's for jets. Looking at pictures of both you can see a lot of things that do match up like jlw515 mentions. It does make sense, the Intrepid was fairly close by to Hasbro HQ. Would of been a pretty short trip there and they would of been able to crawl all over it more or less and take a ton of reference pictures. Something they could of never done with a Nimtiz class back then at the height of the cold war.
I had always thought it was a Nimitz class, that was at the time the brand new top of the line carriers. I also thought it some parts in common with the older Kittyhawk class carriers as well. But I never even considered it could of have anything in common with an old ship like the Essex class. Learn something new everyday! |

Jason Didn't realize this until now but the cancelled POC Phantom X-19 has a seat they looks a lot like the one that ended up in the Sky Striker XP-21F. Also the X90 is a new nose/cockpit/forward fuselage attached to the wings/back half of the cancelled Sigma 6 2.5" scale jet. |

I always thought the Wolverine was a modernized equivalent to the Ontos.
On the topic of the Wolverine, has anyone else noticed that the Wolverine, and also the Slugger and the D.E.M.O.N. (to name the two that spring to mind) all have the driver on the left hand side as opposed to the right? Unless they are designed for British roads, that makes very little sense. |

The Wolverine is probably loosely based on the Army's mulltiple launch rocket system, the MLRS. I might have missed it in there somewhere but the VAMP/Ninja Combat Cruisier has a lot in common with the M-ATV. |
