Most of the Joes have code names that match their specialty (Flash, Grunt) or suit their personality (Chuckles, Footloose). Some have names that would work as nicknames (Duke, Hawk) or just sound "cool" (Jinx, Snake Eyes).
The one code name (at least from the earlier Joes) that I don't get is Grand Slam. I guess they were trying to connect baseball and artillery, but it seems like too much of a stretch compared to the other Joes, especially the early ones. It's not a bad code name (unlike Skidmark) but it just doesn't seem to work that well to me. What code names don't work for you? -c Ice cream soldier is a WWII slang term for a trooper that never lost his cool under fire. I would have to dig out one of my old books, but there is a historical reference directly from one of the soldiers in the pacific campaign that I read about. Skid Mark. I loved that figure and the desert fox..but ooohh man did we make fun of that name..

On a funny note...The 1st time I seen the commercial for Gung-Ho, I thought the voice over said "GUN HOLE" and I totally thought the marks on his chest were a massive wound.
Then I seen the figure and my dad told me what GUNG HO really meant.
