Hey, guys... I had a chance to talk with Larry Hama a bit over the past couple of days about the movie, comics, and the brand in general this year...
Check it out: GeneralsJoes Interviews Larry Hama He's got some very interesting and honest things to say... Justin |

Awesome interview. Have even more faith in the movie. I love his response to Duke being so important. I'm glad that Larry has a realistic view of Joe needing to change/adapt.

"GJ: You’ve been on record in the past as not caring a whole lot for the Duke character in the Marvel days. Was having him be such a major focus of the IDW universe at the request of Hasbro?
LH: It always has been." This is kind of a strange, response, IMO. He's basically saying it's always been Hasbro's decision to make Duke a focal point, right? I guess he's just being political about it. |

"It’s always “cooler” to be negative; If you are a socially retarded anal-retentive developmentally arrested proto-adolescent with hostility issues. No, the movie does not adhere to the comic book canon. So what? It was a lot of fun to watch, I liked the characters, and it made sense. To me that’s much better than a sharp stick in the eye or two and half hours of “art.”"
Love it!!

I think Hama has more freedom when it comes to writing Origins but he knows that this universe will never be completely his--certain "requests" will always limit/restrict/influence the storyline in some way. I sense his frustration with this, though it's subtle.

First Jerwa. Now Hama. You're 2 for 2 General Hawk!

Which, unless you do creator-owned work, is the norm in the comics field.

I love that he said he could never complete any of the animated stuff cause it was so bad, but that he likes the movie. I take that as a good sign for how well the movie will be.

What's so strange about it? It's fairly common knowledge that LH never wanted Duke, Stalker was his choice for the Joe team sargeant. At least with IDW he's trying to give Duke some more personality.
