The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow story is either the most important or the most tiresome aspect of what Hasbro likes to call "the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy", depending on your perspective.
But setting aside the matter of whether ninjas have a place in the story, which version of said story was most elegant in its handling of the feud? There's the original Marvel Comics series, which introduced the ninja story. I haven't read it, unfortunately. There's the Devil's Due series, which I did read but which I no longer remember. There are the new comics... which I've also never read. Sunbow never really went into the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow story... Unless I'm forgetting something, then, that leaves: Rise of Cobra Retaliation Resolute Renegades (They should really change the name of the company to Hasbrrrrrrro). For my money (again, having never read the Marvel stuff or the latest comics), Renegades is far and away the greatest telling of the tale. The killing of the Hard Master, the confusion surrounding his murder and Snake Eyes becoming mute is all interconnected and revealed within one elegant two-part story, and I for one love it. The tracheotomy, the vicious ninja star across the throat of Snake Eyes... it's all handled well, and it's much more compelling than I usually find the ninja narrative. What about you lot? What's your favorite take? |

I intend to, eventually. I'd like to read the new stuff, too, although I read Cobra #1 and wondered what all the buzz was about.
I just have a hard time paying the prices they charge for reprints of old comic books, and my library's graphic novel section doesn't include G.I. Joe, so it may be a while yet. That doesn't count for much, for me. I make the property whatever I want it to be. I do wanna read the Marvel stuff, though. |

I like the Marvel version the best, but I did like the whole Devils Due comic where they had SE and CC running around together before they became who they are. They had that connection for losing loved ones in the same car accident. Eventually going their seperate ways after SE couldnt kill the judge that nite. SE went to the Arashikage clan and CC became who he was.
My second favorite version would be the Renegades version.

Marvel, hands down.
Renegades was pretty decent too. Worst one has to be ROC. Kiddy SE and SS was a terrible idea. |

Oh, and I truly believe that you MUST read Snake Eyes Declassified! It takes everything Hama did in Marvel and ties it up neatly in a bow, filling in gaps along the way. It may take a few different directions that not everyone is cool with (SE speaks in the earlier parts before he loses his voice...although I think they used every scene with great intent/purpose in telling the story), but it is my SE/SS bible. The art is fantastic, too! I have the hard cover version that collects all 6 issues.
I'm 99% sure you won't regret the investment if you are a SE/SS fan. Why not 100%? Well, simply can't please everyone, now can we? ;)

I agree with everything but the last. The worst telling of the SE Vs SS story was by far Resolute. It took everything that made Storm Shadow a multi-layered character and turned him into a bitter cheesy villain.

I love the Marvel because of Stalker, SS, and SE serving together with "Fred" before all the ninja stuff.
