The original Marvel Comics series, which introduced the ninja story.
Marvel run is G.I. Joe's Bible for true hardcore Joe fans. This thread needs a poll.

Marvel ARAH series was best. The tragic hero story of Snake Eyes impressed me as a 10 year old and still does.
The Renegades and Resolute arcs were very good too. ROC was by far the worst. They dumbed it down for kiddies going to the movies when keeping the tragic hero arc for SE like in the Marvel ARAH series would have been wise.

Gotta echo what everyone else has already said, cause it's basically gospel: the Marvel comics run that fleshed out the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow saga is the be-all and end-all. Everything else was based on it; some are better than others and some are mere pale imitations.
Also took another look at Snake Eyes Declassified and it's interesting cause the story fits in the gaps of the Marvel story much better than that time Larry Hama himself tried to fill in the missing scenes (the 21.5 comic that came with the figures...what a train wreck that was.) But there is one thing that's glaring and distracting about SE: Declassified. The art. It's not bad. It's not good. It's just typical comic book art. But EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. is depicted as a shirtless, muscle-bound six-packed Adonis. I know that's pretty typical of comic books for the last century or so, and I read a lot of comics and never really notice it. But it's so strangely prominent in this series it's actually distracting. Cobra Commander? Ripped...abs, bulging biceps. Walks around in pajamas. Zartan and Master Onihashi? Both totally ripped....glistening muscles, bicpes, abs. Snake Eyes and SS....same. It's just weird! There ARE adult males in the world without perfectly chiseled features! Sorry for the rant, but it really takes away from what's otherwise a cool and fun story. |

+1 for Marvel.
I'm not too keen on the SE Declassified run, it was interesting, but I really didn't imagine the pre-Ninja SE like that at all. |

I like the Marvel version the best, but I did like the whole Devils Due comic where they had SE and CC running around together before they became who they are. They had that connection for losing loved ones in the same car accident. Eventually going their seperate ways after SE couldnt kill the judge that nite. SE went to the Arashikage clan and CC became who he was.
My second favorite version would be the Renegades version. I enjoyed the Marvel back ground myself it the one that always stuck to me in my head though the G.I Joe rise of Cobra was interesting in the sense of Snake eyes being half Japanese or what ever and meeting Storm Shadow catching him stealing food and so on |
