This is what drives me:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/genera...eneration.html Memory Lane, what defined you from your generation? For me, it was the 1980s. Here are the personal things that made me who I am today. 1. Vision Skateboards & BMX (I had to trade a lot of Joes to get my Psycho Stick board) 3. Saturday Morning Cartoons (G.I. Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K., TMNT, Dungeons & Dragons, Ducktales) 4. Video Games (Pacman, Space Invaders, Pitfall, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Tetris, Duck Hunt, Frogger, Super Mario Bros., Punch Out!, Zelda, Excitebike, Contra, Outrun, TMNT, Excitebike, Double Dragon, Mega Man, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros. 3) 5. Blockbuster Movies (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the JediConan, Mad Max, Ghostbusters, Stripes, Gremlins, Indiana Jones, Batman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Terminator, Top Gun, Back to the Future, Rocky, The Karate Kid & Rambo) 6. Lower Budget Awesome Movies (RAD, Gleaming the Cube, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Goonies, A Christmas Story, The Lost Boys, The Breakfast Club, Gotcha!, Red Dawn, Blood Sport, American Ninja, Kickbocker, Delta Force) 7. Lots of good reasons for why you do what you do. I would like to state that I did not mean to look down or isolate anyones reasoning for why the collect or what they expect. I suppose that nostalgia seems to be the largest reason for collecting. I think that may be why I do,although I am never sure hence why I ask. But keep em comin' guys.

I love action figures and have been collecting for years. I grew up in the 80's and played with Joes and Transformers and M.A.S.K.. When i first stumbled upon the modern era, 25th Joes, i just couldnt pass them up.
Nostalgia definatelly drew me to them but more importantly was that they were, at that time with the 25th stuff, the best G I Joe figures ever produced. The quality, articulation, accesories, card art, everything was right about them. I also loved how they improved on the original versions of the figures i grew up with. Even simple things like their accesories fitting in holsters and knife sheathes. It was the small details, to the great details that drove me to start collecting Joes from the 25th on. The greatness and awesome details of the continuing lines, like POC, Retaliation, and the 30th, have also kept me collecting. |

The toy soldier seems to be as old as the concept of toys. Look back at history and it's just something about toy soldiers that is a huge draw for young boys.
What drew me to GI Joe in the 80's was that it was like the little green army men but about 1 million times better and cooler. Throw in the adventure aspect and it's a bit more Indiana Jones than real world military. Also just something appealing in the 80's to a universe where race and what sex you were were totally not important in the least little bit. It's like GI Joe was the world I wanted to live in instead of the world I lived in. Never joined the military because I'm not a morning person and if you are going to give me a gun then I don't see any reason to ever run either towards trouble or away from it. I play a lot of World of Tanks if that counts for anything. What keeps me coming back is that Hasbro keeps finding a way to make the figures better or they keep adding cool new characters to the GI Joe and Cobra universe. I think the toys also remind me of the good times and sometimes you need a happy place when the world seems dark. |

I'm ultimately after display potential and playability in my figures. Good sculpts, good assortment of accessories, and good articulation.
As far as the kinds of concepts or themes possessed by the figures(ie realistic military), it depends on my mood. I enjoy GI Joe largely because of the balance of fantastic(near future science fiction and mystical elements) with the reality inspired aspects. I like how you can find more than one genre in the GI Joe brand. There are some GI Joe toys that draw more heavily from realistic military elements and there are some GI Joe toys that are more out of this world with ray guns or mystic ninja motifs. I like how I can arrange a display of more real world styled GI Joe toys, a group of high tech sci fi soldiers, a cadre of ninjas, or a mixture of all these themes. |

Nostalgia is key, of course, but at this point it has to be something beyond that. The thrill of the hunt definitely plays a part. Also, I would probably collect toys whether GI Joe existed or not, and the modern era Joe toys have a perfect mix of detail, articulation and accessories that makes me want to spend way too much money on them.
As far as the "theme" of GI Joe that keeps me hooked: I look at the Joe team as just a step below superheroes. You've got this gonzo universe with an implausible terrorist organization, insane technology, ninjas and a military unit with no uniform or real organization. My Joe squad definitely has a military feel to it, but mostly they are Indiana Jones-style pulp adventurers, who get into over-the-top scraps and exist almost outside of normal reality, which is the only way the whole thing works, IMO.

Nostalgia is my main reason. I had every single figure from 82 to 84, minus a few key ones. Almost all of the vehicles too, including the HQ. And my dad even said he liked my collection when I was a kid, so he gets a kick out of seeing my set up when he visits

Guess cause am a army brat and it showed that even girls like Scarlett, Cover Girl, Lady Jaye Etc can kick some butt on the field but have all that feminine charm.
Am tired of people saying that in order to be in the military they have to sacrifice that side of them and have to be butch and angry. Not true at all. I loved reading the comics gave me something to have my hands on reading and dreaming |
