Don't forget that most everyone has a secondary specialty to fall back on. It seems a little nonsensical for an elite unit like the Joe team to have such specific roles. Most real-world SF units are jacks of all trades, and for good reason; if one member goes down, the rest can carry on because they've trained in the same field. Trying to make Joes into a realistic unit that complies with DOD protocol has driven many a Joe fan mad. Beware.
I did something similar with the figures based on their year of introduction. Example: Zap was a Combat Engineer, so Tripwire would fill his role for the second team (1983).

So what I did was breakdown teams by release of figure with sub teams. So -
Alpha- stalker, SE, scarlett (originals) Bravo- duke, roadblock ..etc Charlie- flint, footloose, etc On and on I say that because each team has certain specialities for each member that make up a team speciality Seals- Wet Suit, Shipwreck.... Good for recon, hostage rescue, inflitration ...not good for heavy assault Also sub teams like Artic and Armor (Steeler) Then a HQ element with Hawk and lady Jaye ..etc So even though each soldier has a specific speciality the are functioning units part of a whole |

I see the Joes as highly trained troops with specialties, but who are flexible enough to improvise and are constantly picking up new skills. The way it is portayed in the comic, there were never any designated fireteams, and even teams like Tiger Force seem to have been temporary. In a more realistic scenario, there would be several bases for the Joes, and groups of different sizes might be deployed for shorter or longer periods in different places around the world.
