What elevates G.I. Joe above Masters of the Universe and Transformers and all the rest?
What keeps you coming back? Is it the military angle? The science fiction components? The pulp adventure aspects? |

Nostalgia. Plain and simple. That's what keeps me interested in all the various properties (G.I. Joe, TF, MOTU, Thundercats, etc), of which, I honestly cannot deem a favorite. I love 'em all quite equitably.

I was into Star Wars in kindergarten, but didn't have a bunch of the toys. I remember liking the size of the figures, though. Then, in first grade, gi joe hit, and I got my first figure for my birthday and was pretty much hooked. Immediately I liked joes better than SW because of the articulation. I also liked the realistic military theme. To me, military was fantasy, as I didn't have any immediate family members in the service. I have always favored the more realistic military aspects over the sci-fi stuff. And I LOVED the omits as a kid. I'd definitely watch the cartoon, but there was more if a story in the comics. While I'm still a SW fan, joes are my homies.

I have nothing better to do?
In all seriousness, it's such a rich and expanded universe with 30 years of great stories and toys.

We were really spoiled for cartoon and toy choices back in the 80's so that's a good question.
The toys just seemed better than anything else on the market. GI Joe and Cobra came with some cool guns for the character to use, the articulation beat everything else on the market so you got all those cool poses, the vehicles were cooler and more creative than other lines, plus they were small enough to pack in your pockets for a day spent playing by the creek. I think somewhere deep inside that idealized world just appealed to me. In GI Joe and Cobra it really honestly didn't matter what color you were, where you came from, or even if you were male or female. Baroness and Scarlet could mix it up with the rest of them and no one payed any attention to the color of someone's skin. The massive cast also meant there was always a new character to rekindle the excitement. After the original 13 it seems like Hasbro could get creative like putting a sports jersey on a character in a military unit. Perhaps that big adventure aspect as well. It seems like GI Joe had it's fair share of Indiana Jones style adventure that was just fun. But it could also get serious like in the comic books so you got a feeling GI Joe didn't always treat you like a little kid but was willing to show you a bit of the adult world. |
