As a composite clone I was wondering about Serpentor's strength level. In the old toon he was strong enough to give the ridiculously strong Sgt Slaughter a run for his money and in the old comic he seemed to be a average man. The later comics amped him up a bit . My opinion is that he has a peak human strength level. Sort of like Captain America's in the Marvel Universe.

Well...IMO his mix of multiple DNA was both his strength and weakness. In the comics he seemed to have somewhat of a multiple personality disorder/identity crisis and because of this unaware of what time period he may be in. This proved efficient at times but ultimately made him do careless things. In the cartoon I always felt like he was written differently. At times he was written to be superhuman and at times whiny and coward-like and even at times clueless. But I think this was largely because they were forced to use him so used him however the plot needed. I love Operation Dragonfire but he deserved a much more dramatic exit.
It seems you love Serpentor. You should really check out the Cobra 2 comic run. It features him prominently. And IDWs take on him while different still feels very much like classic Serpentor. He was also in the current number 1 issue of the new Special Missions comic by Chuck Dixon. |

Yeah, I agree with your assessment-- maybe as strong as a very strong human, but nothing ridiculous. Sunbow never shyed away from the absurd, and yet to my recollection, he never did any great feats of strength.
Which is kind of odd, really. As a very sci-fi character, they could've done all matter of crazy things with him; made him bulletproof, laserproof, and superstrong, and yet they kept it pretty reigned-in.

As a kid, I thought the ideas behind what made up Serpentor were totally awesome.
As an adult, while I'm still willing to suspend disbelief, I just kinda have to laugh at his filecard because none of the stuff that they wanted from the "components" are things that are defined by genetics. More on-topic, I go with the "Peak human/supersoldier" side of things in my personal Joe-verse. |
