I'm one of those that has been around from the first of the ARAH days, through Devil's Due, VvV, etc, into the modern era.
I definitely think the toys of the VvV era make me more appreciative of the 25th. Even characters/figures I'm not fond of personally, like Matt Trakker or Croc Master, are leaps and bounds better than the stuff we got during that era. As for the comics, I'm not sure. I think DDP dropped the ball more often than not, but I'm trying to give IDW a few more issues before I make up my mind whether to stay with it or not. I can say that the first issue didn't really impress me, but it's only one issue. I'm willing to give them at least one storyarc to make their mark. |

I bought trash for a long time hoping that I could help bring back GIJoe and now that it is back I generally dont complain, I just restrain from buying everything, only what I like. I have always pretended like I have a major role in demand. For instance chili goes up 15 cents at wendys I stop buying it to show them I will only pay the old price. GIJoe hikes up CP prices, I dont even look at them. I do my part to only support good products but back in the day I would buy anything so that GIJoe would still exist.

I got back into GIJOE in the early 2000's. It was the TRU COBRA Infantry sets that did me in.
I preferred the ARAH style to the so-called "new sculpts." I have a few new sculpts in my COBRA army (blue/red Vipers, grey/purple Tele-Viper, Interrogator, Viper Lockdown Vipers, Range Vipers...think that's it). The present line, well, when it began, was what I'd wanted Hasbro to do with GIJOE since, well, 1997. So I've been very pleased with it. I thought some of the new sculpt stuff was good even though I don't presently own all the things I liked. As for the Devil's Due comics, I have some of the trade paperbacks but I never read them anymore. I stopped early on, I never knew anything about the Red Shadows and all of that stuff. |

SPy Troops and Valor vs Vemon brought me back into G.I. Joe. I thought the sculpts were amazing and the vehicles with battle sound made me feel like a kid. I remember needing the R.O.C.C. to live! It made me find the old cartoons then those cartoons made me need those 25th figures! I love rocket luanchers with my Joes and sound and lights on the vehicles. And the comics, America's Elite is my favorite. It made Cobra Commander into the badass I always knew he was. I haven't read the new comics due to price and the fact they are staring over. The movie toys look ok. Mostly as new characters I'll make up or customs. If the movie is good it will make me buy more figures. Just like Transformers did. Except I don't expect the movie to be that good.

Quote:
T-crotch - DETH OF TEH LINE!! 2-packs - DETH OF TEH LINE!! Crappy package art - DETH OF TEH LINE!! Sound Attack! - DETH OF TEH LINE!! Venomous Maximous - DETH OF TEH LINE!! Hi-Tech and not Dial-Tone - DETH OF TEH LINE!! Sigma 6 - DETH OF TEH LINE!! The movie figures SUCK! - DETH OF TEH - Wait! No they don't. They look pretty cool to me. Quote:
I believe Hasbro took note of a LOT of our complaints from the "New Sculpt" era and made sure incorporate what we like and leave out what we don't like in this line even while aiming at the kids. We complained about bulky weapons being molded all over the figures. With the exception of slipping a molded weapon on Resolute Duke by us, most figures have had working holsters and removable gear. Two things that jumped out at me with the movie line: 1) Yes we get spring-loaded weapons, but we also get a couple of regular weapons, and can throw the spring-loaded weapons in a box or the trash. 2) None of the movie vehicle drivers are movie characters, but cool RAH characters like Strato-Viper and Moto-Viper. That way collectors who want the vehicles but not movie figures aren't stuck with them. After going through the "New Sculpt" era, I think it's easy to see that Hasbro IS paying attention to collectors, and is doing their best to accommodate them as best they can.

Personally, I stopped collecting Joes when they revamped the line for the Sgt Savage mumble grumble. Everything about the line and the characters were completely laughable so I walked away and focused on other lines (Beast Wars was one). When Hasbro finally wised up and brought back the 3.75 I was intrigued but it wasn't enough to bring me back to the fold. It took the 25th release with all new sculpts to bring me back. And now I'm hoping we get updates on the VvV/Spy Troops line so Blackout, Scalpel and Kamakura don't have these exaggerated bodies next to the rest of my 25th collection.

man I COULD NOT stand the T crotches from 02 and the ones with the gimmicks(VvV Tcrotch Duke, Slice). There were some molds in the JvC/ST/VvV line that were pretty good and can stand the test of time. One aspect of the line that they introduce, i thought it was a good idea but looking back, I wish they didnt do it, is "skirts" on the figure.
Some molds, I like the design but fell short on execution/color scheme ie Alley Viper 2, VvV Destro(could have been great update to his IG uniform), |

I sold off the majority of my collection on ebay to get money together for my drums and guitars. The comics got me back into GI Joe, and I loved that it picked up a lot from the Larry Hama stories. I would pick up a few figures of old favorites from all the new sculpt lines: O-ring JvC, Spytroops, VvV, DTC but I never obsessed or had the gotta have 'em mindset that I did with the 25th/Modern Era stuff.

I never considered it "enduring" anything. I actually enjoyed the toys and DDP. I've been collecting them since the 82 RAH days, and the only things I really didn't like were the GI Joe: Excrement aka GI Joe: Extreme. I remember the disappointing relaunch in 97 as TRU exclusives, but it was still great to get new figures. The ST, VvV, DTC... all of them were exciting to get not only new stuff, but NEW Characters!
The 25th is great, and I'm all over it. But as I've said before, my heart lies with RAH. As far as the comic, I think it's too early to tell. We're only one issue into the IDW stuff, but DDP continued 25 years of continuity. The only DDP decisions I didn't care for were the deaths of Flash and Lady Jaye. But, it in no way diminished the comic. There were some real winners that came out of DDP - Like the first Master and Apprentice series. I personally hope that the current modern line, whatever it's called, brings in more new characters, expecially from DDP. Kamakura, The Stall Family(Barrel Roll, Bombstrike, Blackout), Some of the newer designs of old favorites... lots to choose from! |
