I am also a huge fan of the Marvel run and have no problem with their use of ninjas. It just seems that things these days are more and more revolving around ninjas and moving away from the military aspect. See: "Retaliation". At least 75% of each trailer or commercial I see for it is ninja related. I think the best recent portrayal of ninjas was in "Renegades".

Well, there is also the "everybody's a ninja" syndrome that seems to be prevalent with the new movie, in the later issues of Marvel, and even into the modern toy line (how many different Cobra ninjas are their now - Cyber Ninja? Combat Ninjas?)
Also, some ninjas cannot die. SE has been "killed" on a number of occasions, but always defeats the odds - even when ninjas say he is dead! SS was shot three times in the chest - yet not only survived but required no medical assistance! (Interestingly, when stabbed he nearly died ... or did he?) Other ninjas are quite easy to kill, even masters. IDW went a step in trying to correct this with SE nearly being defeated by a mere Cobra trooper, but later backed away and allowed SE and Helix to defeat an entire base by themselves. Why bother with a team when two characters can defeat an army?! The problem with ninjas is that it is flaunted so much. Why not simply have a character who has ninja training? Why not have the whole team trained as ninjas - but they all have primary specialties? Initially, SE tried to hide his training from the other Joes - note that Scarlett had to call out SE for faking being thrown. But later, SE seems to be the only one flexible enough, sneaky enough, or with reflexes such that he can do just about anything - and would only team up with other ninjas. Why could Kamakura be trained when say Clutch couldn't? Why not train Quick Kick or Spirit? On the Cobra side, Ninjas seem ubiquitous. They are everywhere. Night Creepers, Red Ninja clan, Zartan, Firefly, and others all are ninjas. Why wouldn't Zartan give some ninja training to the Dreadnoks - or to his own siblings? Cobras were cool when they were unique ... or even mysterious. Now, they are neither. And they are indestructable ... or pretty worthless.

I don't hate on Ninjas, they have their place.
But Retaliation is carrying it to extremes, having everyone and their mother be ninja-trained. For me, ninjas are just highly skilled martial artists with some tricks up their sleeves. The League Of Shadows, as portrayed in Batman Begins, is a good example. They're not uber in any way, they can be defeated. They're on equal footing with the Joes for the most part. But in Joe, they're too common and made to be too strong and tough. And Retaliation just takes it too far.

2 points on the "Everyone's a Ninja in Retaliation!" business:
1. I really believe most of this is just for the toyline and not for the actual movie. I really doubt anyone is going to call Roadblock a "Ninja Commando" in the movie. I'm not even sure he'll have an Arashikage Tat on-screen (but he might). Yeah, Hasbro's hitching their wagon to the Ninja thing pretty hard for this movie, but are they wrong to do so? Anyone remember what the hottest selling boys action figure line was this past Christmas? Hint: It's got "Ninja" in the title.... Also: Hard to say how strong and tough the Ninjas in Retaliation are compared to non-Ninjas when we haven't seen the movie yet. 2. From his very first filecard, Snake-Eyes secondary military specialty was "Hand to Hand Combat Instructor." He's SUPPOSED to be training other Joes! |

I can think of a few tricks SE should have passed on to the other Joes: faking death, healing trance, how to run through bullets without getting hit, how to be sneaky.

The best trick that Ninjas can do:
Get kids interested in a brand that they aren't familiar with.

First off, I just say that I don't hate ninjas. While my fav version of SE is the commando version, I also dig that he is well-versed in martial arts and can wield a sword. I think this adds depth to his commando status. I have some love for Storm Shadow. I can dig Billy a little. I am a fan of most of the marvel run, but when everyone seemed like they were ninjas --- Zartan, Firefly, Scarlett (although that's forgivable since she did have some martial arts training), it got to be a little much. I always thought a soldier who was part of an elite military force that ran around shirtless and barefoot (Quick Kick) was ridiculous. I was definitely more into ninjas as a kid, but I've always loved the more military aspect of GI Joe. I realize that GI joe incorporates elements of military, Sci-fi and the supernatural, and I know this is what sets it apart, but IMO, a little less of the ninjas would be better.

First of all, Starbuck... AWESOME SIG! I LOVE GALAXINA!
Sorry, now back on target. The ninja angle in GI Joe is super cool if used in small amounts. It was something I really loved in the original Marvel run because at first, it was not overused at all. It mainly had to do with SE & SS and did not overpower the book. Later in the run, when zartan ran the Red ninjas, Firefly was revealed as a ninja, then Slice & Dice, then Ninja Force... it got old pretty quick. I am excited to see Retaliation though because there are supposed to be some references to GI Joe #21 in the ninja battle scenes! Wordless ninja action!

G.I. Joe is an army themed toy. What do Ninja have to do with the army?
Nothing. Ninja are cool. Yes ninja were cool back in 1985. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are still very popular characters. The fact that they go around wearing masks and carrying swords like ninjas do adds to their popularity. They aren't popular because they're ninjas. They're popular because they are unique. If everyone is a ninja then it loses what makes them so popular in the first place. |
