Though not many people would consider the Club's continuity as gospel, I sorta wondered what the relationship was between their Adventure Team Commander and Colton. Their stuff seems to vaguely follow RAH continuity so I figured Colton existed. So is it safe to assume that figure is Mike Triumph and not Colton?

There is much ambiguity surrounding Joe Colton because as a character he was invented after the initial concept of GI Joe. His story, history, and relevance to the brand have only been 'fleshed out' gradually by writers building on previous remarks and allusions of others as the brand has moved forward in time. There is no deep, definitive story as of yet of the character. Perhaps, in the future, more writers will contribute to develop that story.

I always see it as sort of a combo of a few differant situations.
I see Colton as the Original 12" Soldier no matter what form or branch he was given in various 12" incarnations. When Joe shifts gears to the Adventure Team era, we start adding new characters...all new people added with Colton as the overall commander. The main reason I view it this way is because the Club issued 3.75 version of the AT various 'Adventurers' and all those adventurers have file cards with Classified names but each one has a differant birthplace. All of which are differant than the birthplace listed on Joe Colton's filecard. But thats just me. |

Lt. Joesph B Colton was recruited from the US Army Special Forces by President Kennedy to head up a new elite group, a group of knights for the 'New Camelot', under a code-name 'GI Joe'. Colton wound up recruiting other team members, including Jane, a nurse, who would go on to become a physicist and Colton's wife. In the 1970s Colton briefly left the Army when the military became unfashionable and travelled the world as an Adventurer. He later returned to the US Army before becoming head of security at the secret SDI lab atop the Chrysler Building where his wife was chief scientist.
All from his comics appearances in ARAH Marvel. |

My understanding, he is supposed to be based on the original 12 inch action soldier. He was introduced in the Marvel run as someone the Joe team went to help. After he ended up helped the Joes fight of some Cobra Vipers who were dresses as Iron Grenadiers, Hawk offered to make him an honorary member of the Joe team, to which his partner Jane replies they were too late, and he IS the original GI Joe. It was later revealed the Joe team was actually named after him.

the original 12in Joes were supposed to have names - Skip was the sailor, Ace (iirc) was the pilot and the soldier/marine was Rocky. then they decided to name them all 'GI Joe'.
the whole business with Joe Colton in ARAH was basically a nod to the previous incarnation of GI Joe in his first and last appearances because it was the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the 12in figures' debut. his second appearance was less so. |

Sorry didn't notice the separation. I'd still say unless they mention otherwise that current Club's 3 3/4 Adventure Team Commander is Mike Triumph.

That's what I consider him, I was only fleshing out some of the details of how Colton started the AT and was its former Commander according to Hasbro. I def agree that the 4 figures from the Club are Mike Triumph and Co. who are the figures in the actual '70s line. GI Joe, Big Red, and the unnamed pilot all simply came before them for the story from the '70s Club newsletter.
