I don't get it - is this supposed to be some kind of revelation to us?
GI Joe HAS been reinvented - several times - since RAH WAS retired in 1994. Yeah, we got the 25th Anniversary line, but big deal. Every toyline out there is getting an '80s update. You speak like that's ALL we've ever had. And the bold font is a bit annoying to the eyes, by the way.

I'd be willing to give a complete Joe reboot a chance, but people need to bear in mind that Hasbro isn't Mattel...they aren't gonna put out an ARAH line just for us online, because they did that once and it was a spectacular bomb (to the point that it's turned Hasbro off from doing online-only lines for years since). .
Problem was online shopping for the masses wasn't an every day thing at that point. If Hasbro took that risk today, it might just pan out. It is still a risk however. My personal opinion is, if Retaliation fails to reinvigorate things, Hasbro will use the club as a "Matty collector" venue to release subscription type product. I would rather see it go through HTS at a $14.99 SDCC type price point before that happens.

This thread is retarded. "This is a GI Joe website for people who love GI Joe ARAH, collect the toys, read the comics, discuss the topic daily, etc...but it's time to totally move away from the concept that we all came here for!" What the hell kind-of-sense does that make? It's been around for 30 years now. There are peaks and valleys. The figures that just hit stores are pretty damn cool, and the stuff shown at ToyFair was really awesome as well. The OP is a masochist.

DTC was ahead of its time, consumers were not ready nor used to buying things online. That year at the con there were long lines to get to a computer and order the first wave.

The Club is already doing their subscriptions, that's unlikely to change as long as people keep buying, but once more, Hasbro has pretty much decided they're not an online toy seller (HasbroToyShop...isn't really). They want their stuff in the stores. Full stop. If it's not successful/popular enough to get into the stores, then it doesn't happen (beyond perhaps an occasional exclusive). That's how Hasbro works. Could it change? Sure, but there seems to be absolutely no drive from Hasbro to do so. If they had any ideas about doing a subscription-style program, they wouldn't have let the Club do theirs. |

I would rather see it go through HTS at a $14.99 SDCC type price point before that happens. the reissue Astrotrain (despite "limited to 3000 pieces") sat for almost two years The special edition Transformers figures didn't fly off shelves. The MARS trooper pack was an EPIC failure, and Hall of Heroes (selected by the fans even!) had 1/3-1/2 its range sit anywhere from 2 to 3 years (some stores probably still have a Flint or Beachhead or CG available today) The Cloverfield monster was also a solid flop (Entertainment EArth got a bunch a few years ago for super cheap), being one of Hasbro's first foray's into "collector products" Not only that, but in TONS of threads, you have a bunch of people piss and moan about how their local retail isn't getting stuff, they can't find the newest toys, etc, etc. These people continue to refuse to buy their product from online stores with prices only slightly above mass retail (wave 2 SE is running 11-12 at most I've seen), do you really think these people will support the line with a 30% premium on the price of the product ON TOP of the bluster of figures being $10 to start anymore?

I think GI JOe, as a brand, just needs to stretch it's legs and try something different. Bring back Adventure Team (I still think that was a lost opportunity back in 2007, I saw a LOT of kid interest, and you could still play the concept off ARAH nods like the characters). Or if they are going to insist on the "Joe vs Cobra" ideology....Do something NEW!
Make Duke black. Turn "Snake Eyes" into a woman. Make Destro a rocket launching military commander. Turn "Storm Shadow" into a stealth pilot. Make new characters. But I think, barring Retaliation being a big hit, Joe is going to continue its downward slide into the realm of forgotten toys as long as it keeps rehashing the EXACT same stuff we've been getting in various forms since 2002. ;) ..but I do agree that Hasbro needs to find a way to move the brand forward. One thing: Snake Eyes -as is- seems to be the biggest, best, and longest lasting point of public interest in the GI Joe brand. It's collectors that are bitching about him. He's probably the Joe equivalent of Optimus (which is genius if you think about it as I worry about what will happen to Transformers when Cullen dies) probably the easiest thing GI Joe can do to change things up, *I* think, is to just discard Duke and Flint. This may be just me completely not liking any other versions of these characters than the Michael Bell/Bill Ratner versions, but I think this alone would open up a new field of possibilities for a new formula. Maybe it's also time for Cobra to get a complete overhaul. Me personally, I like the fact that Retaliation looks like it's going to be the Roadblock/Colton show instead of Duke and/or Flint. That's not a bad place to start, IMO.

Toys in general are suffering from the same lack of focus the entire country seems to suffer from.
Just reinvent it syndrome. There used to be a time that you made a product and stuck with it...sure you kept it fresh...sure you tweeked the product here and there trying to make it better or fresh again but you didn't change the damn format of the show every chance you got. Imagine if Cheers decided that every season to keep the show fresh they would gut the bar and remake it every year or even two... And Cheers did eventually have to blow things up when it became tired, then it took one core character and moved him to Seattle.

You wrote a lot of words down there. I'm not gonna lie. I didn't read them all. I'm gonna go out on a lim and assume I agree with you to some extent just for the sake of argument. If you could keep in mind that I have about a three second attention span from now on when you post, it would be much appreciated.

So yeah, Hasbro has reinvented Joe and moved away from the ARAH concept. Time will tell if it worked. And just because SE is in Retaliation and is a black clad ninja, doesn't mean he's the ARAH character.

They can always try new things. I'm for that. If they bomb, it's not like they can't do ARAH again. Or even at the same time. I want some 3 3/4" Adventure Team toys. I like the GI Joe Jurassic Park idea. If it's GI Joe, I'm interested.
