Ideally based off of the Marvel ARAH series and action figure filecards and using only characters introduced between 1982 and 1983, what actors and actresses would you cast as which GI Joe or Cobra personas? Remember - they have to have been available for casting during this same time period.
The idea originally presented itself to me when I decided a Grand Moff Tarkin/Peter Cushing head would be good for a Dr. Venom custom. One of my favorite actors, I thought Mr. Cushing would have been amazing as Cobra's head scientist. Then I started wondering who else might have been choice if a movie had been made during the early Joe years. Any suggestions?

Man, that's a tough call...
Are we talking people we would have wanted to see casted or who actually would've been? Because no matter what era you are in, Hollywood will always stick it's flavor of the week heartthrob in a summer blockbuster movie, so I'm sure we likely would've just gotten the Channing Tatum equivalent of 1984 if a movie had been made then. If it was late '84 Don Johnson would've been feasible as Miami Vice had taken off by then, possibly playing Duke. Burt Reynolds sans mustache as Hawk (if we're portraying him as a general). Pierce Brosnan as Zartan or Destro. Of course throw in your typical action star fare...basically anyone from the cast of The Expendables. I'd have to really think about it, but I'm sure I can come up with many others.

This question popped up in the letters page of the Marvel comic, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts were at the top of the list. People even suggested Barry Bostwick if I remember right as MegaForce ads were emblazoned all over the early issues of the joe run.
Schwarzenegger and Stallone were in there too but honestly they were so typecast I think that would have been a huge mistake. in 1986 Slaughter would have been appropriate. Personally I would have wanted unknowns. who were the unknown actors in 1985 that became huge stars by oh say 1988 or 1989?? They would have been my choices so lets see: Melanie Griffith Michelle Pfeifer Frances McDormand River Phoenix Tom Berenger Eric Roberts... Dolph Lundgren wasnt a star till 85... ok maybe that wouldn't work so much after all.

I would have said Wesley Snipes as Stalker, but he wasnt in a movie until 1986.
Michael Biehn as Grunt, Bill Paxton as Breaker. I always thought that Sonny Landham(Predator's Billy) or Lou Diamond Philips would have made a great Spirit Iron Knife.

River Phoenix was too young he would have had to have been Billy. I am talking about actors who were proven to be very skilled by the late 80s in their craft. not the pop star of the day. all these actors were Oscar nominated at some point. Hollywood does not cast based on looks, they have proven that time and time again. in 1984 you would have seen maybe Tom Cruise and maybe Julia Roberts. the rest would have all been unknowns. and it would have been really cool if the unknowns from the GIJOE movie went on to become huge stars no? a lot of actors cut their teeth on war flicks. Sean Penn Micheal J Fox etc etc.

Melanie Griffith was 26 in 1983 so was Frances Mc Dormand Tom Berenger was 32 a perfect Duke or Flint age Eric Roberts was 26

I would say Harrison Ford would have made a great Hawk. He would have been a colonel back in 1983.
No point in making Snake Eyes a well known actor as you wouldnt even see his face. But saying that from the first time i saw Michael Dudikof, not that he was a top actor, i always thought he would be a cool SE. Even Steve James would have made a good Stalker.

Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket) career started in 1982
Adam Baldwin (Full Metal Jacket) career started in 1980 R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) career started in 1982 all prime candidates for a Joe movie as unknowns at that time

That might have worked. He was done with Jedi and Temple of Doom was being filmed in April 1983...
