The '87 movie intro sequence rocks the house. I have no problem with other iterations but for shee emotional k'chang, this segment wins hands-down. The comic book scenes may be cool, but they are a different medium and their impact is far less liekly to be as compelling to as many people.

While awesome, in retrospect it makes no sense whatsoever.
What exactly was Cobra's objective? Based on CC and his little bomb, it was to blow up the Statue of Liberty. So why risk sending your supreme commander to do that? And why launch a full on assault? Send in Firefly when it's not a huge celebration and get the job done. Hell, they have the giant flying fortress, just launch a few missiles from that. Also convenient is the entire joe team happening to be there waiting. They shoot lasers yet there are shell casings flying everywhere. The firebat, basically a cockpit strapped to a jet engine, has a windshield fragile enough it can be punched through. Yes, it's a great sequence, but its so illogical on so many levels. destroying a National monument- be it the Twin Towers or the Statue of Liberty, are however, precisely the sort of destructive tendencies of terrorists. In a larger context and to put the scene on a symbolic level, Cobra's attack is not only an attempt to destroy the Statue itself, it is an assault on LIBERTY. Cobra Commander wants to destroy liberty. |

Re-watching it again (and this time on the Youtubed BluRay version, I was struck by how some of the action resembles the "zipline" approach from Retaliation. Also, by the idea that this densely animated segment was done without the aid of computers. There
's some very sharp animation work in this. |

nah, if you were to look at all the GI Joe history and canon, I would say there are 3 moments that rank higher:
1.) SAW viper executing joes in a dirt hole in the ARAH / Marvel Comic run 2.) Cobra Commander (Spoiler Alert) getting his head blown off by Chuckles in the IDW run 3.) Lady Jaye taking it and dying in the DDP run, throwing Flint into grisly emo Flint mode

I keep that little Cobra logo from the 25th five pack on my desk, just so that I can hear that Cobra song every so often.

It's an awesome sequence, with a great theme(especially the Cobra parts) but it exists in a vacuum, it's sole reason for existing is to be a really cool intro and that it is - logic never entered the equation.

What a pity the rest of the film went so wrong, so quickly...

Why is the movie's opening being picked apart for logic? The openings to any of the seasons just had a mash up of action. Hell, Alpine and Bazooka were playing catch with Destro in one. |
