One of the things I've been collecting and really like are these Lead Figurines from Eaglemoss. They have both the Marvel and DC license, as well as a Lord of the Rings license (doing a chess set).
The figurines are Joe-scale-ish and highly detailed. They are even doing the Batmobiles. I love the things and keep thinking that it's something that could really fit G.I. Joe. Could do a line of vehicles and characters. They are basically mini-statues and each comes with a magazine giving the history of the character. I could care less about the magazine, it's the figurines I really like. I really could see other lines done in this form; Masters of the Universe, Thundercats; but would love a series of Joes done this way. They are only sold in specialty stores (comic shops) and online. I usually get 'em through BBTS: BigBadToyStore.com Search

Because they look like overpriced pieces of junk? Because they gather dust at every LCS I stop by? I'd rather get an action figure that is a little bigger and can be posed. People who bought either the 12" or the 3.75" days are probably going to scoff at the price and the short-lived fun factor of the mini statue. People who didn't aren't even going to bother picking one up in the first place. Do I want to get a short history on a character in print or just look him up on the internet? Probably the cheap and easy google search.
To add, the Vinyls toys announced and shown off by another company is a good example of a niche market item with too little market to actually buy it.

Fair enough.
Not everything is for everybody. The 4" Vinyl things, I have zero interest in. The micro figures, a little more interest in. The figurines are a niche market, but there's nothing wrong with that. It'll appeal to some but not all. Personally, I love the things. About the only thing the girlfriend likes having displayed because it's more art-like then anything. I have no interest in the MOTUC figures, but if they did a line of figurines, I'd buy 'em.

I have to say no...its not like I don't like them their pretty cool, but I think one of the biggest issues is the split personality some toy lines show these days...specifically Joe.
Concentrate on ONE line of merchandising...figures, vehicles hopefully bases with a comic and toyline tied in to support it. The line has no need for knock off cosplay gear or under 5 toylines, or pogs, or hero clix or Bakujoe, or deformed big head Joe or tiny feet Joe or any such little off shoot that will last one or two waves then disappear or worse sit forever on toy shelves....I mean seriously I can still buy those little two packs of Joe Heros style figurines at some stores. Transformers does the same thing...even if you like say....Bot Shots....Hasbro will have lost interest in these guys in a year, so whats the point? Just like Robot Replicas, or Robot Heros. I get that lines will have a gimmick each new release its just the way to keep the line fresh and interesting but a gimmick should add to the main line not take up space that could and SHOULD be used to support the main line. Now if you want to market Lead Joe figures to a more limited market like comic shops, or gaming retailers who sell things more collector oriented thats an idea I would support, but the division of focus at mass market is and has been (in my opinion) a marketing mistake. |

I don't see the division of focus as a marketing mistake, but more as trying to grab the different demographics out there. The hope is that like one line and would want to explore the other lines. And it's not like they're competing lines. Having a Joe building set doesn't compete with the action figure line or the collectible line (the vinyl figures, micro force and where the lead figurine idea would fall). It's diversifying and trying to get a piece of all the pies.

That's where I would see these being marketed at, the niche collector's. Definately not a mass retail thing.

And it's not like they're competing lines. Having a Joe building set doesn't compete with the action figure line or the collectible line (the vinyl figures, micro force and where the lead figurine idea would fall). It's diversifying and trying to get a piece of all the pies. Ahhh true...but its also a flawed idea in that it makes consumers have to divide their cash dollar. Buying toys is a rough hobby in this day and age as is. As a kid I had many toy interests from Lego to Joe to TF to Star Wars, Star Trek and a few others. I have had to cut out all but the most BASIC of what I like...Joes and TF. The key words here are lean, mean and self competition. Hasbro is always looking for way to supposedly SAVE money while still making more money than it spends from reuse of molds in repaints to the ever disgusting reduced articulation of figures. (Which by the way I will gladly sacrifice foam swords for better articulation) I don't mind reuse of molds or repaints its actually a pretty smart idea and some stuff has come out amazing. But when your a toyline and you competing for buyers against Lego, or Playmates or any of a dozen action figure lines such as Marvel, DC or many others tossing out things like the terrible Built to Rule line or the rehashed Kreo makes your target buyers have to decide, will I buy that Skystriker or will I buy that block building set. Now just from a plan-o-gram stand point many retailers place building block sets no matter which brand with other building block sets....thus naturally steering buyers away from the action figure aisle to begin with. And hey I am not putting down Lego in any fashion in fact I still say Lego is the ULTIMATE toy, you can literally build any kind of toy you can think of which is amazing...your limited only by your imagination, but trying to stick a finger in every pie is pure and simple over extending yourself. Home Depot and Lowes have recently done something similar yes having stores cobviently located isn't a bad idea...but they often put so many stores in so small an area that if one store makes a million dollars they put one in down the road and suddenly that million dollar store only makes $500,000 and corperate screams why? The answer is self competition. Am I say Joe should NEVER branch out? No...but you branch out when you've solidified your base which Joe is anything but a solid brand these days. Marvel can do this and thats probably because right now Superheros are likely at its all time high in terms appeal in decades. All I'm saying is lets walk again before we run. Sorry Troy sorta soapbox highjacked this topic....lol. Last edited by Owner of a Lonely B.A.T.; 01-20-2013 at 01:52 AM.. |

Sure, why not?
They can do some major marketing for them. Marketing that they would even get me to buy them. Then slowly but eventually all Joe Collectors die of lead poisoning. It's all part of Hasbro's evil plan to get rid of us. No more whiny adult collectors to put up with and they can finally do whatever the heck they want with the Joe brand.
