I was traveling for work, and stayed at the Hilton in Chicago, IL. While I was there, the Hotel was hosting a "Harry Potter" convention. Hundreds of teenagers AND adults running around, dressed like characters from the movies.
One of my colleagues said "this is pathetic. At some point in life you have to 'grow up'." I lost my cool and confronted him, pointing out that he cheats on his wife, doesn't take his job seriously, neglects his son, and is all about how much alcohol he can consume, and getting over while taking as much salary as possible. Just because you're of a certain age, doesn't mean you have to stop liking the things you did when you were younger. I make Lego minifigs (except 2012 - where I was constantly traveling). I also have an arsenal of weapons in my house as I build rifles, sell them, shoot them, etc. I ride a mountain bike, play video games with my nephew and niece, coach wrestling, fish, attend Lego conventions, and am a good husband to my loving wife. I take it personally when people try to prey on things they "perceive" is wrong, but in reality they just can't shake a tough guy image.

I normally point out what hobbies said person likes and try to explain in a way they can understand. When I was in high school nobody made fun of me for having toys with me. One person tried and he never fully comprehend what happen when he did. I never cared so it was useless for someone to make fun of me. I am not ashamed that I still play with toys. I use to take them to school and show everyone how cool the were. Everyone in my classes new this and I would pass them around the classroom during class and everyone was cool about it. I still do this today at work. When a new person tries to say something I explain it to them in a way they can understand by relating to their hobby. If the dont, they can go fuck themselves because I just dont care what other people think about it.

I never really understood why people think that toy collecting is stupid. I guess because I've been collecting for so long. It makes people happy and it's a lot better than doing drugs and other stuff. I think some people are afraid to admit that they love geeky stuff so they don't feel like a geek. Geeky is just normal for me.
To each their own. We all might find something that someone else does as being stupid because we do not do what they do. Collecting anything, such as toys, can sometimes be put in the same boat as doing drugs because it can become addicting and be a burden on your health as well as others. In some cases it's been looked upon as a sickness like hoarding. I'm sure many collectors out there have lost friends and family due to their collecting addiction, not mention losing things such as their home and car because they couldn't make the payments after spending too much money on their collection. I've read pleanty of posts like that on this site as well as others. Sounds like any other addiction doesn't it??? Even with that being said it's like any other vice in life out there. You just have to know your limits and can't abuse them.

I dont think its stupid (obviously, I collect toys) but I do think it is stupid when it consumes one's life and think that its the end all be all of the world and find it funny when a person thinks they are the best thing on two legs cause of their collection when people around them really dont care. I feel sorry for those people. I admit if I find something I really want I get al giddy like a little kid and even did a dance once in the aisle while my wife laughed at me but it doesnt consume me.

One of my other hobbies besides Joe/action figure collecting is Korean pop, and Im QUITE surprise of other types of people besides the usual Kpop fans. And this was before PSY became mainstream.

The only thing I do is ignore the haters because haters gotta hate, and I hate hatin', no matter how negative people gets to you.

My few thoughts on this topic..
I think there are some that will never understand this hobby. Or having any hobby. That's fine with me. Honestly, there are those that collect toys that I don't understand.. Like those who collect multiple lines from different properties, or men and women who collect toys designed for the opposite sex (males who collect Barbie or My little pony). I also think that as a collector it is VERY easy to get addicted to trying to attain everything. This is a legitimate issue, as the addictions begin to consume their lives. I personally think that modern social networking and forums, although being a positive outlet to discuss hobbies, can feed and increase those with addictive and obsessive behaviors. We must never let things consume us. That is hoarding. I feel our collecting must always have a focus and be displayed in an organized fashion. In my experience, it is more controlled and rewarding that way. This can be applied to any hobby. Too much of anything is not a good thing, and a hobby is meant to be fun and add to your life not inhibit your life. Very very very few of us will ever have the capability to open a museum or large display area, yet it seems that a majority of toy collectors state the possiibity of opening a museum in the future as a reason of continued collecting, particularly of items that are not wanted by the collector for any other reason other than that they do not currently own it. I am also guilty of exercising in practices others do not understand. I army built the deal out of 25th line. Like 50-100 of most cobra troop builders. Many don't understand that, but I display them and love to see the armies I dreamed of as a child displayed on their shelves in my home. My other hobby is cars, and many people don't understand that hobby, even though it is much more accepted in main stream culture. It's also A LOT more expensive for me. I don't understand those who collect coins or stamps, do gardening, or taxidermy, or who gamble, or who drink, or even those who in my opinion, just boringly drudge through life with no hobbies at all. As a collector I have come to respect that as people we all come from different places, and get excited for different things. I appreciate the passion that people have for hobbies, I don't understand, because I try to correlate it to my own life. I will also mention that this is a very private aspect of my life. I do not publicize my collecting to anyone outside of my immediate family.I am not embarrassed, I just have no desire to explain why I collect to those who would not understand.. it would be like communicating in a different language to some. I do it for my personal happiness.Nothing more, nothing less. It takes me back to my childhood, with memories of a simpler and pure time. It's part of my attempt to keep my inner child alive. |

Iv'e never really had anyone judge me, they might look at me oddly when they find out but i could care less. People do much stranger things then collect toys, so to me its just a normal thing.
Iv'e been collecting forever now, its a huge part of my life and at times ive had to catch myself from going overboard. It's hard to justify spending a certain amount of money on a toy that sits on your shelf. I learned this the hard way when i was really into transformers. OMG you think gi joes are expensive, go start collecting TF's and you will want to just quit unless you make a good amount of money. I think with collecting you just want to have it all as quickly as you can get it, atleast thats how it's always been for me. You have to live within your limits and be patient or before you know it, you might have a serious plastic crack addiction. I lost one of the most meaningful realtionship's iv'e ever had, mostly because i couldn't stop being selfish and realize i had a down ass girl. I had all my bills and priority's taken care of, i just forgot about my g/f. It's kind of funny and really sad at the same time. But i got so caught up with collecting that i took her for granted and she just kind of got pushed aside like a old vintage fig. We just drifted apart. By the time i realized what had happened, it was too late, she didn't want to be with me anymore. Iv'e been chasing amy ever since.

I've noticed that most people that talk crap about toy collecting in public usually think my collection is cool as hell when they see it.
They just act a way to look cool to others, that's all. |

i always think if you cant appreciate the little things in life how will you ever appreciate the big things. if you cant find joy in the smallest of things like a new cobra trooper or a car that turns in to an fing big robot then i have no time for you n your life sucks. remaining semi child like has helped me keep a happy and sane life among all the hecticness and grown up bollox, and it is infectious my misses loves how excited i get everytime we go to tru and now she gets excited, bless her.
