I just made it through issue 0-27. I've read Cobra 1-4, but am waiting to finish it in the collected edition: last laugh.
I'm curious about where to go from there... Is origins worth reading? Is it necessary? How about hearts and minds? And the Snake Eyes series? How much of this series is truly worth it? |

I'd like to know too! I also just caught up on reading IDW Joe and Cobra, and loved it! Convinced me to eBay a 25th AOCI Chuckles, since he was so awesome in all the Cobra series.

get the snake eyes series its amazing. I am a big fan of Chuck Dixons take on the Joeverse! Robert Atkins art.
origins is cool too it runs side by side of the first idw run of G.I. Joe and there are some really cool insights into the characters :-) I have them all in singular issues but am thinking of getting the books too so I can re-read them at will. To be honest im surprised they are not more popular!!

IDW stuff is hit and miss IMO. The Chuckles story is my favorite but IDW seems to have figured out this formula of knowing how many pages they have and how little of story they can squeak into those pages; just to make it to the next issue to do the same thing.
As a consequence, the story seems to take forever and ever. Now I know the writers are sitting back in their living room writing this stuff up and thinking they are going to make this tremendous payoff in the end BUT by that time, most of the readers have switched to some other comic with some other story. There is a balance to be made. Sure you want to cliffhang the reader so they buy the next issue, but you don't just write several issues where pretty much nothing happens. That is the most annoying thing and it seems to be the norm these days. It is a far cry from the 80's with Hama. Check out any of the issues between #21-50 and you will see what I mean. I remember X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now those were the days when writers and artists tried to MAXIMIZE what they could tell and draw on a single page. Back in those days these creative team was trying to shove as much action into a page to keep the reader turning pages and begging for me!!!! The art may not have been pretty but it worked. These days that craft has been lost to the advent of wide angle shots and overly dramatic cinematic shots. And the art still is suspect at best. |

Origins has good and bad story arcs. The first one is solid but after that it's back and forth. I love the idea of the IDW stories but it just seems like they aren't sure how to go about them.

G.I.joe main series is a hit or miss. with Dixon writing it has improved.
Cobra is a MUST. the stories are good and it tells something that adds weight to the characters. Origins i recomend you the fourth trade, the story of Monk, is not exactly a Cobra story but for the story alone is worth it. Snake Eyes is really good, especially the first issues with Atkins drawing. |

Regarding the IDW run, I'd have to do some re-reading as the story-lines are all so intertwined between the various G.I. Joe sub-brands that I don't tend to (or need to) remember which particular comic I'm reading. it's bloody confusing, pardon my French. |

Sounds like you about the same point I was at. Buy this:
Its the first 8 or so issues of all three "Season 2" stories that pick up immediately after the end of G.I.Joe #27. G.I. JOE: Cobra Civil War Compendium: Chuck Dixon, Mike Costa, Javier Saltares, Will Rosado, Ron Adrian, Robert Atkins, Agustin Padilla, Alberto Muriel, Casey Maloney, Antonio Fuso, Chee, Werther Dell edera: 9781613775615: Amazon.com: Books Then the Cobra Command tradepaper backs are next. If you want to read origins you can, I was not terribly impressed, but each to his own. Five isssues of the "Season One" Cobra run are not included in the oversized hardcover, "The Last Laugh". Pick up volume 3 of the series (The book is titled "G.I.Joe Cobra: Serpent's Coil") for more on the Coil. If you got anymre questions after this you can PM me. I've already spent the time to research this stuff and am almost done completing my collection.

i've read all the IDW original comics to date. I read them in order and not "all gi joe then all cobra then all snake eyes" if i remember right it was joe cobra snake eyes...repeat or something like that. I've gone back and re read them as i took a break from the line and then went crazy on itunes catching up...still great reads.
as for the origins...if you're the type that wants someone else to "fill in the blanks" on how joes came to be...go for it, however if you prefer to stick with your own imagination i would then say "stay away" from origins. I did like cobra vol 1 as well...something i would suggest reading...though if you like chronological order, read it first important events happen that further explain everything later |
