Looking into real-world inspirations for the early Real American Hero era Joe vehicles, I'm stumped on this one. I know the VAMP nodded to the XR-311 and Cheetah and the MOBAT was sort of designed from the M-551 Sheridan (although I think it looks a bit like the British FV 4201 Chieftain as well). I also know that most of the stuff that came out between '83 and '94 were purely imagined by the toy designers. I imagine that the RAM took its design from some existing motorcycle, but what? The closest I could find was the Harley Davidson MT350E. Yet this still looks a tad unlikely. Since I have no real knowledge of motorcycles, I figured I'd put the question out there and see if anybody could make an educated guess, or might actually know - what motorcycle was the RAM based on? And was there ever a gatling gun sidecar developed by the military?

Maybe it was the 1981 Honda CBX.

Hmmm... similar lines, engine and exhaust positioning. It would have to have been heavily modified, made lighter and more durable. Any other suggestions?

While I am not the definitive expert, I am almost 100% positive the army never tried to develop any type of armed or assault motorcycle.

Was there any allusion to where the GI Joe team got their gear? Cobra had MARS, but did the Joes have any R&D department working exclusively to suit their needs? I got the feeling that early on some of the team members like Steeler and Clutch modified their own equipment, but as the team expanded and received more funding (along with some of the more ridiculous vehicles and armaments), some of these would have to have been scratch built prototypes that were eventually built on a small scale (like the HAVOC).

It does look like a modified version of the '81 Honda CBX.
Here are some specs for the R.A.M. The R.A.M.'s motorcycle unit has a weight of 390 lbs. while the gun pod takes a whopping 870 lbs. full load. The 1000cc twin cam engine with turbo fuel injector enables it to reach speeds up to 95mph on full load and a range of 450 miles. Not to be outdone by the unknown, the driver is provided with a electronic radar unit built in to the front chassis. The 20mm Gatling gun is a Vulcan series provided with 1,200 rounds of ammunition.

I know this is a really old thread, but I was doing a google search for the same question. I found the Norton Commando might be a good fit also. I would love get a nike to mod to look like the RAM
