Another thread got me thinking on the "realism" of my Joe battles when I was younger. They were never just spontanius battles, there was always a catalyst of somekind. I vividly remeber the opening sequence of one battle I had while growing up... the Joes had CC held captive in the brig of their headquarters (the multi tiered one that flipped open) and they KNEW that there would be a attempt made by Cobra to rescue him. Anyway, the Joes are "standing by to stand by" (if you were in the service, you know what I mean). Hardball and another Joe (Snake-Eyes IIRC) are hanging out on the top level of the HQ when a Cobra Battle Copter comes swooping in and drops off a Ninja Viper (who was hanging on to the underside). During his descent, the Ninja Viper pulls out his sword and cuts Hardball in half (vertically) as he lands. Snake-Eyes then picks up Harball's grenade launcher and shoots the NV with it, propelling him off the side of the HQ where explodes into a raging ball of fire before he can hit the ground.
Realistic? No. Freaking awesome? Yes. So, again, my question is... how realistic were your battles? Please feel free to cite examples... |

Outback, awesome. I've been sitting here trying to think of something specific, but I can't really... all I know is that I would spend hours covering the floor in the basement and just go from there. Good times, good times.

Mine weren't very realistic I guess but they were awesome. It always started with a few Joe's being on patrol and getting captured. They would always get tortured and beaten. Some would be killed. Then the Joe's would come in to save them and usually get slaughtered. It was usually Snake Eyes with Cold Front in the Avalanche that saved they day in the end and beat way to many Cobra people to be anywhere near realistic.
Snake Eyes (V3) and the Avalanche (w/Cold Front) were my first Joe toys so they were always my favorite. I got them both on the same day. |

ahh summers at home with Joe's on the floor.
My brother and I ever summer would have great epic "wars" with our GI Joe toys. These would sometimes last a month. we played fromteh time we woke up till the time we went to bed. anyway we kept our battles semi realistic. killing off joes and cobra alike. We used to use red bread ties as "bloody" bandages for our joes that got injured. There was no real plot to the wars however it was just joes fighting cobras as we killed them off one by one. but some of the action was really silly. We used outback and Rock n roll as our comic relief. usually they would live though the battle because they got lost or found a perfect hidding spot. When ever we had a tank or something blow up it stayed on the battle field and was usally used for cover later. We often also used large stones and small branches to act in this manner. our joes got injured, killed, and ran out of ammo whic was part of the fun. we tried to make as realistic as we could. This was usualy done in the form of rules. such as no one is invincible not even snake eyes. one of the best adn yet worse rules was if any of our figures fell from a great hight acidently (we often used bunk beds adn such as mountains) they where officially dead no matter how much we didnt want then to me. same thing if like you threw a missle from a jet and it accidently hit a character they had to be dead. which resulted in the most epic GI Joe death we had. cobra fired a missle (this was a spring action missle) and it hit Falcon strait in the chest. it was epic and sad. I really miss those days. |

Mine weren't so much the actual battles as the set-up. I'd make a fort with Cobra defending it, and the Joes moving in to assault.
Then I'd switch it around.

I was fortunate to live in a big house (My Dad owns his own Design-Build company and the house was forever being added to.) Anyway, as a kid most often I would setup the fight that spread throughout most of the house. It would take most of the day to setup and the battle only took like 10 minutes going from room to room ending in my bedroom. It all had to be back in my room before my mom came home from work!!!
When I would just stay in my room they were much smaller affairs, usually special missions type scenarios. I kept it as realistic as I could. They shot bullets not lasers, ran out of ammo or fuel, could be killed or injured. My battles would usually continue for a week and essentially reboot. As I got older, I developed my universe as i have know and kept ongoing themes. For those Joes I didn't own they either never existed in my world, are on assignment, or have been killed( only if I have no desire to even locate that figure.) If I get them (through ebay or other sources) I just write them in. Man it takes me back to those summers as a kid setting up those battles and having a blast. |

I had a lot of broken items, also the "Road Warrior" and "Planet of the Apes" were movies that I remember watching a lot. Because of that most of my stories revolved around some post-apococalptic scenerio, or ones where the heroes were stranded in some strange world. They would often take refuge in an abandoned AT-AT that had an origin which had to be discovered. Sometimes Cobras and Joes would both be stranded on an exotic planet or something in a "Secret-Wars" type scenerio. Of course once I got my Terror-Drome, all future battles revolved around control of that thing!
