Unfortunately, I have only read the Marvel series up to 140. I'm still working on them. I own all the DDP series, so I'll read that next. I feel the Marvel series is pretty sweet though. I did enjoy the GI JOE Vs Transformers graphic novel that was recently released.

Marvel. DDP had some great ideas but poor execution. I mean the start of Elite had a promise, with Cobra in disarray. And World War three had a good start, but it was almost like they tried to get every character in the arc so it diluted the promise.
The snake eyes dead and turning evil was so bad, DDP had to get rid of their message board to stop the slander. Ask yourself this...take the first 20 issues of marvel vs 20 issues of DDP and you got to go with Marvel. They had a limited cast during that run so you got to get to know the characters somewhat more. Elite had around the same cast and although better than the first DDP offering it was still weak. I actually didn't mind frontline though. I thought DDP was on to something there. |

MAKE MINE MARVEL.
The Three Strikes For Snake-Eyes storyline started me off. It was freakin' awesome. I already had Clutch and a few other figures but wasn't as in to them as I was Star Wars. Then I got the comic. Breaker Gung-Ho, Stalker and Snake-Eyes in Rio Lindo. Gung Ho riding in the truck full of pigs, trading his lighter for a sombrero and a poncho and kicking the radio station guy's ass. Dr. Venom, Scar-Face, Cobra Commander. Foreshadowing Destro's 1st appearance. It just got better and better. Snake-Eyes trapped in the bunker with Kwinn and Dr. Venom, Torpedo just barely missing him tapping back a reply in morse code. The Joes piling into a taxi and driving into the back of a moving C-130. "Scarlett, you drivin'?" I need tp make the Taxi and I need to make a Naja Hana Video Game Co. Van for Scar-Face to jump out of. The later issues lost a little something with Ninja Force and the D.E.A., Star Brigade and Eco Warriors, and Lime Green Tank Megatron having the hots for Dr. Biggles-Jones. But they were still decent even if they weren't as down to earth and cool as Stalker, Outback, Quick-Kick and Snowjob getting their asses thrown in a gulag. Or Cobra Commander and Destro in fake beards stealing a car from a dealership with the Commander using his used car salesman skills to forge all the paperwork. The Cobra Island civil war between Serpentor and Fred with Destro and the Joes jumping in. The comic was just bad ass. Even when the (one and only) S.A.W. Viper popped caps on Doc. And most of the vehicle drivers. Quick-Kick, Crazy Legs and Breaker were KIA too. And poor Cool-Breeze... We hardly knew ye. Devil's Due was cool, but it sometimes felt like this weird forced nostalgic feeling. They tried; some of it was really good, but in the end when they brought in the stupid Red Shadows, killed off Lady Jaye and ended the series just to switch to America's Elite, I gave up. I want the IDW reprints to come out NOW!!! |

The DDP run couldn't have happened without the Marvel backstory.
Maybe it's sentimental attachment, but to me, the support characters for the Marvel line like Soft Master, Billy, Candy etc. were more interesting than DDP's support guys like Alexander McCullen, Wraith, Kamakura. |

Oh man I just read the Hama written DDP Frontline issues 1-4. They are so hard to read because of the bad old Marvel comic style he used. With the overuse of characters names and the dialog was sooo bad especially the last issue. I'm guessing that the die hard Marvel fans ate these issues up

I don't know why, but I like the Devils Due run better. Sure I was really little when I was reading the Marvel stuff so my memory probably isn't that good. I was reading DD stuff only a couple years ago and I felt it was really good. The artwork was fantastic and that is what REALLY drew me to it.

Marvel #1-80 was mostly greatness. It went downhill after that VERY fast, just like the toyline. DDP? Well I liked him in WCW from 96'-98'. Thing went down hill for him and WCW VERY fast after that as well.
