On facebook GI Joe has just under 202,000 "likes". We know the Collector's Club has a membership somewhere in the range 2000 members. We also see that many stores will only carry between 1-3 pegs of action figures, of which some are sure to sit for quite some time before selling. This site has over 22,000 members (but only of which probably 1/3, if not less, are frequent/active posters).
So there's at least some concrete numbers for whatever its worth. Quote:
I think GI Joe is an iconic brand, and something which nearly every male in the US ages 15+ can probably attest to owning at least one of in their lifetime. As for people that are "active" fans though, people like you and I, who are on the message boards, news sites, with larger collections, etc. My honest guess would be somewhere under 6,000 total.
However, something I've long espoused was that because of the brand's recognition, there is a HUGE market for "casual collectors", the people who pick up GI Joe figures out of nostalgia for themselves or their kids. These people don't follow every change in the brand, but still have an attachment that provides much needed sales boost to the brand. Probably the only reason Joe has survived at retail as long as it has without any significant media push (barring the film push in 2009)

I collect GI JOE and my buddy at work collects them as well so that is 2 you can add. 10,000 and growing smaller by the years I am sure. There is only so many times you can sell a Awe Striker and a bunch of vipers.
