YES!! this has been a dream. We've all waited some 20 years to get something like this and most would still rather gripe about repaints or parts being reused. geez.

I was one of those kids who always had to play with the other kids who had the whole army. I had very few Joes and vehicles myself, and by the time I got them, I was getting too old to play with them technically. Now here it is, 2009, Im 31 and the father of a 7 year old boy. A GI Joe (Politically Correct) movie is coming out, toys are on the shelves again, and they are re-releasing the original 80's cartoon series I woke up early every morning to watch. Yes, Im going to fully indoctrinate my son into everything GI JOE. I find myself glued to the webisodes Hasbro is offering of the old toons. Im not a collector, frankly you all are disturbed to collect so many great toys and deprive them of active duty on the battlefield. Im going to buy full dvd set eventually and me and my son will watch that. Like the rest of you, Im going to practically ignore the movie line toys. They just arent GI JOE, because all I can think of is how they dont have the guts to call themselves a real AMERICAN HERO. The movie is bringing attention back to the GI JOE product, and that is great.
My son got a few Joes from my family for his May 13th birthday, and I've been buying them every chance I get. Mind you, like my parents before me, Im a middle class dad with a middle class wallet. My advantage is right now I only have 2 kids, not 4 like my parents had. It doesnt hurt that Im still a kid at heart. Already, he has better Joes and vehicles than I ever had. In a way its really an excuse to just sit down and play with the Joes again disguised as a dad playing with his son, lol. We, I mean he, has a Joe x-30 Conquest, a Cobra Hiss tank, Cobra Commander, Resolute Destro(the only one I could find with a silver head) Storm Shadow, Hiss tank driver, General Hawk, Duke, Flint, Beachhead, Snake Eyes, Shockblast, DataFrame, and Slipstream. I have just bought a HAVOC from ebay that used to sit on a collectors shelf and will now see active duty. I also snagged up a collectors Jinx that will see some real action now too. I just cant afford to shell out for the many great Skystrikers on ebay recently. I want one so bad (for my son of course....), I never had one as a kid and always coveted it. So, I finally sit down and play with him today and realize some very disturbing facts. While the new articulation points are great and all, they have their flaws. What were they thinking with the thunder thighs they gave these guys and the wide cod pieces to go with them. They sit bull legged now, most of them anyways, a few didnt get this done to them, like Snake Eyes, but oh man, thats awful. The more I play with the new torsos, the more I wish they were hinged at the waist line, not the sternum. I mean seriously, what advantage is that? as others have complained, the softer plastic hands cant hold a gun to save their lives. That is just catastrophic ! The ankle movement is great, unless your trying to fit them into a True Heroes Blackhawk helo I bought today. I studied that chopper in the store for several minutes today, I felt fairly confident that Joe would fit inside. I asked the cashier on the return policy at Toys r us, and point blank said, if my Joes dont fit in this, Im bringing it back. I cut the tape and pulled out the chopper, leaving it in the plastic, I took our more bull legged Joes and tried it on for size, they fit enough for me to keep the plane. I'll have a full article and pictures on that issue later. As I tried to fit the guys in, their ankles kept turning awkwardly as I tried to sit them in the back seats that are too short and too close together. So, thats a flaw for the ankles I guess. When I got Flint, I had to take out my swiss army and carefully cut the extra plastic that was bonded at the joints and remove excess skin just to get his elbow to bend, not good. The biggest blunder of all is that while the new gun holsters are great, they add to width of the waist and the old mold vehicles new and old will not let Joe sit down. You have to really squeeze that holster and hips into the seats now, namely the X-30 and Hiss Tank. Nobody was thinking of this when they got that grand holster idea. Some of the extra vests, straps, and such are great, but some dont come off, and really hinder sitting in vehicles. Like Resolute Destro has to release his lower belt buckle just to sit down because the whole thing does not come off. Whats with the extra knee tendon? We get the calves to bend back more in exchange for the thighs not bending forward enough. Thats been really dissappointing in that the thighs on some of these guys can only bend to about a 55 degree angle at best because of some straps they are wearing or usually just the bigger nutsack. Id go after the old mold Joes now if they werent so stinking expensive on ebay. Im looking at Dukes butt now and he has the hips of a fat woman but no butt. Im going to just buy the "original" Joes and just let him watch the original cartoons. Even the new CGI toons seem lame to me because I just felt that the animation for the original can never be beat. Besides the movie being too violent for him, its not the real Joes anyway with their Transformer wannabe suits. this new movie is about to pull a Superman Returns. A gazillion toys and a dissappointing movie overall. If I were running Hasbro, Id push the old toons, and bring out all the toys, not just for collectors, but for the kids to actually play with again. I cant think of a better way for my son to be familiar with the reality of terrorists than to learn it like I did, from GI Joe. So that my son and nephews will have the best GI Joe toy ever, Im going to build a custom GI JOE HQ from wood. I'll post pictures of its progress when I get it started. It will be 3 ft wide, 2 ft deep, and about 1.5 ft high, fully enclosed withe the roof opening up to make helo landing pads. There will be a drawbridge type front door that will be big enough for a HAVOC or HAMMER size vehicle to drive inside for repairs. It will feature a Command Station (lots of seats and computer screens), Executive officer office for Hawk, Duke, and Flint to share each with their own desks, a map briefing room, jail, hospital (because Joes never get killed in battle) [I see POW and waterboarding in the future for the GI Joe ally True Hero characters that came with my Blackhawk], Air Traffic Control Room, Weapons room, and two more slots undecided yet. Im going to sand down the corners, paint the outside camo, and the inside gray. Im going to make my own stickers and print them onto labels and apply them throughout the base. It will be the base every kid wanted and will make the actual plastic HQ seem like a pee-on outpost in Siberia. Once Im done with that, I'll work on a Cobra base. Overall, Im 50-50 on the new toys, glad they are here, but a lot of features should have not been upgraded. Last edited by AGNT009; 06-03-2009 at 10:16 AM.. |

They look pretty cool and I admit to purchasing a good number of them. I have to say that even though I find them to be a great blast from the past, the fact that they are NOT 3 3/4" like the old school joes kind of pisses me off. When I restarted my collecting and dug up my old joes and compared them to the new ones I was quite upset that they were not even close to compatible. I mean what the hell is the point in making them close to an inch taller; my old school B.A.T. comes to the shoulders of my new Destro. Is that f'ed up or what? It would be great to be able to bring the new, more articulated versions into my old collection and have them at least come close to looking good. It isn't right that I have to purchase figures like the Baroness and Tunnel Rat just to have some that at least look like they are close to the same size as the others. Rant over.
