That has to be one of the coolest jobs ever....This would be the only job I would leave the Corps for.

Yes, then I immediately got out. The real military is nothing like the G.I. Joe cartoons.

Former Navy SeaBee.
It's very possible that my enlistment was due in part to G.I. Joe. After my discharge for misconduct, I joined Cobra.

Hey LegoGuy, I didn't work on the ACs, did work on the C-130Ts. The Navy equivalent to the H models. I work Corporate and General Aviation now. I miss working on the Herks. Great bird.

A combo of Jack Nicholson's movie "Last Detail" and the Shipwreck from GI Joe.
I was in the Navy 4 years.

G.I. Joe certainly played a part in my decision to join. My job is somewhat similar to Scoop's. Putting that journalism degree to use when I'm not playing with guns and stomping around in boots. The Combat Camera job paid off my student loans almost 13 years ago...I joined under Bill Clinton, no war going on. I've played in the sandboxes a few times and missed anniversaries and my girls' birthdays but I'm glad I joined. I'm gonna retire when I've done my 20 years at age 45 and do something decidedly quieter.

Ah, similar to my branch, "The Chair Force." ;)
While I wouldn't say I joined BECAUSE of G. I. Joe, I have to look back at what drove me to the military. Dropping out of college and my dad telling me rent would be due (glad he did that) drove me to seek my path. However, I knew very little about the military, save for my Joe-playing days (age 10-13). As I reflect now, I would have to say that my interest in Joe at the very least allowed me to consider the military with an open mind. Epilogue: 4 years and out. Currently hold multiple degrees and teach 4th graders...and work hard to promote Joes amongst my students!

I didn't join the military, but I've wanted to since I was about three. Everytime someone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up I'd say "I want to be a GIJoe". I use to get every book I could from the library that was about the military, learned far more than any kid ever should. My Dad use to tell me about my uncle that was a radioman onboard the USS Lexington and later onboard the USS Yorktown. He was at Coral Sea and Midway, after that don't know the rest of his service only that he was on a battleship til the end of the war. That had a big impact on me becoming obsessed for years with the Navy and Aircraft Carriers. If there was a book about them, I either owned it or I had read it at the library. Needless to say I wanted a USS Flagg in a bad way, never had it though. Once I as in high school they gave us the ASVAB my freshman year, scored a 98 on it. Recruiter told me to come see him when I turn 18, sadly he was long gone by then. I played football in high school just to get in shape for basic. It's almost pathetic looking back all the effort I put into it and then once I did get out of school went to see the recruiter. I weighed 283 and I think he told me I had to get down to 220, so I was around 63 pounds over weight. He told me to come back when I lost the weight.
I remember being very disappointed because I didn't just pass but exceeded the fitness requirements. Probably did better than any other recruit they had. There were two guys I graduated with that weighed around the 180s or 190s and the recruiter signed them up and took them to MEPS even though they couldn't even get a mile under 15 minutes I was knocking that out in 7 minutes. I guess I just did too much weight lifting when I should of just been doing more cardio type workouts. That was back in 97, after 9/11 I went to see the recruiter again even though I'd lost alot of the muscle by then but still was over weight. Tried kind of half assed over the years to drop the weight but would get discouraged after a few months and stop. Til now, the last two years I've been working my ass off, literally lol. I've lost 137 pounds and have 117 to go. Yeah I really let myself go the past decade, with a little more hardwork by this time next year I'll be back in the recruiter's office and signing the papers making that childhood dream come true.
