I remember the issue, it was really good, although I haven't read it in a long time. I'd like to respond from two perspectives, the comic answer, and a Military answer.
Comic Answer: If memory serves me, the rattler was able to fly low enough to iniatiate a sneak attack. Also, Ace was not able to be as agressive because of the amount of civilians that were below and Wild Weasel exploited that fact. It ended in a draw, but Wild Weasel needed several environmental advantages to make up for his aircraft's shortcomings. Military Answer: I used to fly planes in the Air Force, and the A-10 is not an effective air craft for dog fighting. That fact more than anything has always inflluenced my desire for a better Cobra fighter. As for the main topic, keep, in mind how Cobra operates. They need VTOL craft because hidden bases wouldn't stay very hidden with runways. Also, Cobra could hardly mobilize heavy armor for the same reason. How would they get a reeingineered T-55 in position for an attack on Washington?! The HISS is perfect for their needs because it's small enough to be transported in the trailer of an 18-wheeler and fast enough to hit the target and run. Perfect for a covert organization. Same with the Fang. It's an eggsheel armed with a sledgehammer! Tiny and fragile, but perfect for hiding and surprise attacks. Cobra would never be able to use the same big toys we do, and they could never slug it out in a full scale battle unelss they had overwhelming numbers on their side. Nope, waiting for the right moment to strike, striking a lethal blow, and disspearing. That's what a real cobra does. |

There have been some excellent posts so far regarding the forces of Cobra that specifically sighted why an agile force for Cobra is more feasible. That is a valid argument; however, there were examples of heavier vehicles throughout the line i.e. the CAT 1 and 2, the Crimson Command Chopper, and substantial fighter jets. The problem has always been that these vehicles were not available in abundance. It would be great if they were made available in the 25th line. Also keep in mind if your Cobra isn't designed around heavy vehicles, then you needn't incorporate them, to be fair I passed on a large amount of smaller vehicles because I didn't view them as effective in my Cobra Force.
