I remember watching the 80's cartoon and i recall that Blowtorch had a distinct Scottish accent ,this didn't make any sense because it says on his filecard that he was born in Tampa ,Florida .
Maybe he is was an American citizen who grew up in Scotland and that's how he picked up the accent ,i don't know but i felt the voice director on the cartoon series should have realised this ,and given the Scottish accent to Destro instead because he is actually from Scotland ? I know it's just a cartoon and it was a mistake and an overlooked detail on the producers part ,but i wish Larry Hama was there to set this right . |

The stereotypical fire-fighter/cop is Irish. It was, indeed, a horrible Boston/Irish accent.

Blowtorch was voiced by the same guy who did Duke and one of the crimson twins...(I can never remember who is who) so he sounds like an Irish Duke.
I uploaded a small sample onto youtube...

Too funny. He sounds like a leprechaun. Man, I love the voices from the show. Most of them are ingrained in my memory, but I had forgotten that one.

Blowtorch is an Irishman (not Scottish as many people on here mistake him for). This might have been one of those cases where the cartoon took some liberties in terms of characters facts and went with their own thing. And Barbecue has the stereotypical "Bastan" Mass accent like the Kennedys (he's also of Irish descent). Michael Bell was the man who voiced Blowtorch. His best line is when he is chasing Destro in "Rockets Red Glare" (which is the same episode that Youtube clip is from) and starts banging on the wall after he loses him. "I had him! I had him and I blew it!"

There's a simple answer, to give the characters more differences and personalities.
People need to stop thinking of the 3 things: Cartoon, comic and figures as the exact same thru all 3 genres. They're not. Certain changes have to happen to make things work better in different genres. It made sense to give Blowtorch an irish accent because it made him stand out from the rest. You hear it, you know it's Blowtorch. I mean, how many lines did the guy have? Not that many. So how do you make a background character stand out and be noticable?

Thank you Troynos! To me, the comic is the 'factual' genre that all Joe information should be gleaned from. The cartoon was just that, a cartoon. It was awesome to watch but take any info from it with a grain of salt.
