I collected the Joe 3.75 from the start. I collected until I was in my early 20's. I never felt too old for the line. But I finally stopped once everything started coming out in neon colors or just re-releases of the same figures in different patterns.
I eventually sold my collection to a comic book store (damn my eyes). I looked at items every now and then, even picked up a few. But never really got started again. When they started releasing the 25th line I could not resist. I loved updates of the original figures I loved. Plus the pistols and knives that used to be just painted on were now USABLE! This was too cool! I liked how they looked like my oldies but were more usable and posable. I think overall, with the figures they release based on the old figures they are doing a great job. I think my fellow tankers also do some outstanding customs too. So if you ever walked away from joe in the past, why? and what brought you back?

Great thread. I can honestly say that I've never left. I too never felt too old for the line, nor did I care that my buddies would always bust my chops about having to stop at Toys'r'Us to see if any new figures had been put out.
My first convention was on the flight deck of the USS Intrepid in NYC way back in 1994 (some of you weren't even born yet!) In those days, we kept in touch via mailing lists and old yahoo message boards. If you're old enough to remember your ICQ number, you're old enough to remember those mailing lists, lol. For those that are troubled by the current lull - don't be. This is a constant for the Joe collecting community. We went through a couple of lulls from 94-01 and yet, we're still all here. |

I stopped around 1994 or 1995. My last figure at that time was General Joe Colton. I liked some of the online exclusives later on, but didn't love any figures until the 25th line came out. Newest figure to date is Jinx. Will I ever quit? I don't know.

October 1988, Im 13 years old on my own in K-Mart
I pick up a Night Raven box and turn it over and over, looking at the art and pics. A group of girls about my age walk past me giggling, "Hey toyboy" one says to me "Buying some toys hey", the others start laughing loudly. I drop the Night Raven, go bright red and run from the store. Did not pick up a toy again until 2000 with the Transformers RID line which opened the floodgates and turned me into a full time collector again |

I collected like many of you since 1982, my first figure being Flash. I stopped around 1989 (I was in high school, had a part time job and would still pick up a figure or vehicle).
I waited to come back...but VvV and some of the TRU releases didn't draw me in. Believe it or not, Sigma Six gave me the Joe fever again. I loved the poseability, accessories and reimaginings of characters. The 25th line hooked me for good. Haven't looked back since. I've branched out into Sideshow figures, but it's been pricey. I know there is a lull in collecting. But I feel it will ramp up come the new year. This is a good time to fill those holes in your collection.

Started around 85 at age 4 and stopped at 13 in 1994 when the original ARAH line ended. i still have the last 4 figures I bought in 1994 still in the package. (Lowlight, Flint, Shipwreck, and Action Pilot)
Picked up a Cobra Commander and a Duke at a walgreens that came with CD Roms in the early 00's just for shits and giggles during the Joe vs Cobra era. Almost got lured back into joe during the DTC era while shopping for a friends son for his birthday. Those Viper 6 packs were tempting! Christmas 2006 I got a Sigma 6 Scuba Duke as a gag present... that opened the flood gates to an almost complete 8" sigma line.. Then came the 25th line and I discovered army building............. Then SideShow came out with their ARAH inspired 12" line. I still actively collect Modern Era joes and SideShow 12" Joes. I never got into any other toy lines. |

I didn't really collect as a kid, just had what my folks were awesome enough to pick up for me. I don't think I grew out of it either, just lost interest around high school or so. Me having a steady job and the rise of eBay kind of coincided, and that led me to start picking up vintage Transformers and some Joes. I also got into Gundam kits, which led me and a couple friends to comb hobby shops and toy stores, where I came across the Real American Hero Collection.
I bought them all. When Joe vs. Cobra came along, I wasn't pleased with the construction, but I snapped them up just because it was new Joe on the shelves. The designs I thought were pretty good for the most part, and once they went back to O-rings I was all-in... until I hit a bit of a financial skid towards the end of Spy Troops. I wasn't really in a position to spend on toys until Valor vs Venom was nearly over, and rather than go back and try to fill in the gaps (my completionist phase was still going strong and it would have cost me an arm and a leg), I decided to keep sitting out. I was pretty engrossed in the world of Transformers Alternators and Gundam/anime in general, and the 25th line started almost without me noticing. I saw the box sets along with wave 1 in stores, and thought they looked pretty cool for the most part (Duke's arms and Baroness's funky proportions, bleh). I couldn't convince myself to buy into Joe again, though. However, that Christmas, I put the box sets on my list for fun. Ended up getting one set from my parents and the other from my sister. The fact that I was in my late 20's at the time bothered absolutely no one involved, which is kinda neat. Anyway, the bug bit me hard. Awesome toys were awesome. I think I had 2 or 3 waves to catch up on at that point, but I set rules for myself: no completionism, no army building, no variant-chasing, no multiples of the same character. 5(!) years later, my collection is far from what a completionist would deem acceptable... I got a decent-sized Cobra army due to re-phrasing the variant rule: no variants unless it's a troop builder. And the last rule got blown out of the water due to all of the multipacks. So yeah. That's my story. Last edited by Hellion42; 08-28-2012 at 10:29 PM.. |

1995. I am 11 or 12 years old. I have been playing with Joes since my 3rd b-day. I buy either the Lt. Stone action fig or one of the Joe Extreme Figs and notice the articulation has gone from good to crappy. Besides, I've just entered middle school and am starting to notice girls at this stage in my life, so, I figure it's time to quit for a while. Two years later, I decide that, since the articulation and figs have gotten better again, I should start collecting them.
