I was just going to say this about the toy line in the US. I remembered that the TF toy line ended before the ARAH line, just couldn't recall what year that was. There were a couple years that no TFs were sold here until the G2 line came out.
I never thought the comic was a top seller for Marvel though. |

I'm pretty sure overall Transformer's was more popular for it's first 2-to-2-1/ years, but Joe had more longevity as many folks have pointed out.
it was, it was outselling X-men for a time ~ it was marvel's hottest property for a period (i wanna say like 20s-50s ish)

Everyone's basing it off US sales. I'd think it should be an international market, since Joe and Transformers were both sold on a global scale...
Many people think Transformers ended around the end of the 80s... In the US, it did in 87... MANY forms of TFs went on afterwards in Japan and other countries, Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, Victory, Zone.... List of Transformers TV series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It kept going beyond the US market, where it ended after The Rebirth mini-series. And the toylines continued past the cartoons. I didn't know this until I got back into TFs recently, but it went on well beyond the last cartoon shown stateside. Last edited by Mandingo Rex; 12-07-2008 at 06:51 PM.. |

Transformers was more popular than GI Joe. A few years ago Toyfare was interviewing Hasbro and the Producers behind GI Joe, Transformers and My Little Pony the Movie. They stated that Transformers had overtaken GI Joe in sales the year before and were the #1 franchise, so despite GI joe the Movie and My Little Pony Movie being completed, they rushed on post-production for the Transformers Movie. Because of Optimus Prime's death in the movie causing such a backlash, Hasbro and the Producers redubbed the GI Joe and MLP so that Duke and the other character did not die.
It's one of those so the stories go. Unfortuantely, Hasbro or a 3rd Party that studied the numbers at the time would say which one was the better seller. However popularity is such a fickle beast that any source could say that GI joe was more popular than Transformers and vice versa. It's really a chicken or the egg since Hasbro owned both properties. |

Another character was supposed to die in the GI Joe movie? I thought it was just Duke (which was very apparent the first time I saw the movie back when it came out). Or did you mean that one of the ponies was supposed to die in the MLP movie? |

oh, i meant specifically "back in the day" i don't think that there's any question TF has been perennially more popular since at least Beast Wars...

As a kid and even as a collector (until recent years) TF has always been number one for me.
