I read a few web comics, just something to do while having my morning coffee at work.
One of them is Shortpacked!, which is toy related and the writer/creator has a Transformer-gasm daily while ripping every other toy line out there. Today, he decided to rip GI Joe. Again. Shortpacked! webcomic by David Willis -- Toys Are Serious Business I do not really care, it is his opinion, but I grow tired of reading his blog about how awesome the 74th version -- this. year. -- of some third tier (at best) 'bot that appeared on issue 112's ninth page as a background filler named Crackle or Slapjack or Nuttugger is superior to all, while any Joe is crap and has no space on his shelf.

"Today, he decided to rip GI Joe. Again."
I'm a fan of Shortpacked! as well... and I honestly can't recall the last time he 'ripped' on GI: Joe. I think at some point in January he had 1 frame of a guy in a Destro mask… that’s it... in 3 months. Frankly, I find his running gag about Roadblock talking to Ethan (the strip’s main character) from his GI: Joe poster quite funny. A gag which has not been used in quite some time I might add. Mostly he uses his strip to point out the insane efforts of toy collectors and the occasional wrinkle in continuity or consistency. His Batman stuff is hilarious. David Willis is a collector himself... he even points out his own idiosyncrasies when he reviews toys. Yes, he’s a Transformers fan that appreciates the randomly produced obscure character… but as a Joe fan, aren’t you? I don’t see what he writes as ‘ripping’ all other toys daily. He’s fairly objective when it comes to his reviews… he even did a little Hotshot bashing on the new Classics 2.0 Hotshot… HIS FAVORITE CHARACTER. So, yes David Willis writes about toys… more often than not the ones HE likes… it’s his website and it is indeed his opinion. I think today’s bit about Dixon and Atkins reusing Hama work was funny as well… because it’s kind of true. Writers are so afraid to change anything because some fans are so rabidly obsessed with the original continuity that any changes that are even thought of get both the writers and their ideas vehemently bashed. Books don’t get bought, books get cancelled and we are once again waiting for something new… and the cycle starts all over again. David Willis isn’t ‘ripping’ GI:Joe… he’s ‘ripping’ the inanity of it all and GI: Joe is just the newest property to undergo this. Besides… it is just a comic… an internet comic at that. David Willis is a great writer and a great artist that produces quality work regularly… enjoy it for that. |

Yeah, David Willis doesn't "rip" G.I. Joe. He's done some positive reviews of several 25A G.I. Joe figures he's picked up, and generally seems a fairly big fan of G.I. Joe in general. He's got some quirky tastes (he actually likes the bright colors and oddball characters), but I've never once felt like he has any "hate" for the G.I. Joe line...or even any particular line. Dude loves toy collecting enough to consistently write a webcomic about it, and it usually ends up with some pretty spot-on commentary as to the nature of the collecting community (particularly its' extreme fringe), and this silly obsession we all have with picking up brightly colored pieces of plastic made for kids well into our adult years.
As for his commentary in this specific instance: G.I. Joe has been riding Hama's coattails for most of the last 25 years. I don't think anyone can deny that. Other lines have gotten plenty of fresh blood in the form of reinventions or new media tie-ins, while Joe has stayed pretty much the same. Even Sigma 6 used the Hama characters with nothing more than an anime twist to their designs. G.I. Joe has had a somewhat stagnant presence on toy shelves, while the lines with "new" media grow (Transformers, Star Wars, etc...). There may be some merit to the argument that catering to the "nostalgia market" has actually hampered G.I. Joe's ability to grow beyond what it's been for the last 10 years or so. It's not as great a factor as the lack of mass media tie-ins (again, excepting Sigma 6), but it might be a factor nevertheless. Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-11-2009 at 12:01 PM.. |

Yeah, he likes Joe alright, not as much as Tformers, but to each their own. I was a little put off by today's strip/blog, because I think so far the comics have been interesting, and I really hate chicken little crap like that, ie, somebody said something in an interview, I'm interpreting it strictly, death of teh line/comic.
Edit: To also say that normally I quite enjoy Shortpacked!, read it every day, and that this was kind of a minor blip.

He's very true about the stagnating part. Fans bash anything that isn't their memories (Sunbow and Comic). Sigma Six, movie, etc...
Resolute doesn't get bashed because it's the most like the originals. I wish these people realized that there needs to be new life in Joe, new blood, in order for it to keep surviving and growing. The two biggest franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars, regularly add new stuff and new versions all the time to keep it alive and fresh.

There is nothing false about that comic strip.
Some people just don't like being told the truth. |

Even Transformers has gone and done the "new" thing instead of just hanging onto the old. Beast Wars, the new animated series, etc..

It's not completely true, they are changing things in the comic, just have Hama's "guidance".

And as scary as it may be, I think Harry Potter might actually top Trek in terms of franchises now.... Trek's been very much on a "low" for the last year or two. But hopefully that changes with the new film/toys/etc... |
