I've thought for awhile now that original audio fiction is the way to go. Check out the traffic joe podcasts get. Sell it in cheap chapters and ta-dah!

Definitely enjoyable, and I wish they'd do a couple more like it. Well worth a read. |

It was okay. The writers werent the greatest and can tell a couple weren't really sure about the subject matter. Brooks didnt do a good job as editor, lots of errors that I had noticed.
I would like to see more but by established authors that know the subject matter, not just G.I. Joe. Check out Greg Rucka's Alpha or Brad Thor's Scot Harvath novels. The Athena Project by Thor had a plot right out of Joe. Tales had too much drone combat. There just wasn't enough of what makes Joe joe. The thing that helped the Star Wars novels get going was the names that were involved. Timothy Zahn was an established sci-fi writer with a good predigree. You knew you'd get a good novel. Then another established writer, kevin anderson, continued the story. I didnt like anderson's as well as zahn's but I was invested in the story so ended up reading them all and kept reading. Thats what joe would need to do.

I haven't read it and it's hard for me to sit and read novels much anymore but I do think it would probably good to have and read. A lot of the reviews and summaries make it sound very interesting and you don't have to worry about the comics artwork destroying your vision of what's going on. If you want to envision Baroness wearing her Resolute outfit you can, If you want Scarlett in her DIC season 2 outfit you can. I'd say take it with you on the plane.

I just started Tales From The Cobra Wars so I don't have an opinion yet. Apparently it's a collection of short stories with no real story arc related between them. I also just recently read the Hearts And Minds collection which was interesting. What seems to be interesting with everything I've seen from IDW is that they're all very influenced by the modern warfare that has developed from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. So I don't anticipate TFTCW to be too ARAH, but I've always leaned more towards GI Joe being realistically done, even with the future/sci-fi inspired tech that was always a part of the original story line in the cartoons and comics.

I haven't read the max allan collins roc prequel novel but the ric novelization isnt bad. yes, collins is a hack, but the novel isnt bad. its based on an earlier screenplay and the movie makes a lot more sense in the book.
for example, cobra commander and destro get away, which fits better with the "rise" title. also the baroness does revert to anna but at the end says she enjoyed doing the bad things she did well under nanomite control. that sets it up for her to go bad again for good.
