Yup! This was around the time ebay started picking up & the scalpers started crawling out of their holes. And the entire hobby went straight to hell. It wasn't about the toys anymore, it was about how much we could get & how much they were worth.

I don't think this is anything like 1995 at all. The brand was basically dead at that point. We all know what to expect and what we are getting in the next year plus a major motion picture is to be released. Not comparable at all to joe life in 1995.
I don't know why so many people are shocked by no toys being on the shelves. We all have known for months now that stuff was being delayed until early next year. |

No sadly, it's not.
At least in '95 I was collecting POTF2 & Star Trek figures, not looking at empty pegs of the only line I do collect. The only figures you really had a hard time finding were low runs - like the original Riker repainted as his clone. Stores used to actually stock the toy section often - the Joe brand may have been in deep crap but action figures were in their second renaissance. Now they're just slowly bleeding to death.

I sort of is, but then again we are only having a hiatus of about one year as opposed to 3-4 years like in the mid-90's so it's not that bad. I personally don't mind this at all. I think this gives collectors a year to put their hobby into perspective and perhaps be a little more grateful that product exists.

That was what I was collecting in 1995 briefly too, and regret it. It's because of that line I decided to never collect Star Wars ever again. If there are good figures in Joe, I'll get them. What I'm most looking forward to is the Figure Subscription service. Beyond that, there are some great figures coming out in the Retaliation line. So I'm very optimistic.

I worked at a toy store in 1995 and vividly remember removing the last bits of GI Joe to make room for the Star Wars figures. A few years later while removing some shelves in the back room I found a carded Voltar in pristine shape that fell back behind the shelves and hadn't been seen for almost a decade.
Foolishly I didn't buy him because Star Wars was my focus at the time. Car accident while moving destroyed my Star Wars collection and most of everything I owned a few months later. Sold what was left on eBay around the year 2000. I briefly tried to collect GI Joe in 2001, had all the original 13, strait arm figures and all the comics ever made, but had to sell all those to cover one month's rent when I lost my job in 2003. Was Joe-less til 2007 and since getting married I've been able to collect the new stuff pretty well. Marriage does bring stability, but only because my wife is a wiz with finances. |
