Hey all,
One thing that I've always wondered about is why did weapons in the weapons packs come in different colours? And awful colors to boot (red, green, etc). I remember as a kid looking at the shelf and thinking, "That's not the color of Cobra Commander's gun, I'm not buying this!". With the explosion of the collector's market in the 90s, I can see companies not wanting to release the weapons packs with the actual colors so that they wouldn't tick off collectors but in the 80s??? GI Joe wasn't the only one to do this. MOTU did this. I'm sure others as well but don't know of any. How did they know? What was the reasoning? RR |

I know exactly what you mean.
There are several theories for this. First off, I remember feeling pure dread as a child whenever my mother would fire up the vaccuum cleaner on the weekends. It was almost a guarantee that at least 2-3 of my GI Joe weapons would get sucked into that thing and subsequently removed forever. You know that certain clicking sound a vaccuum cleaner makes when it absorbs a small piece of plastic? That would be Cobra Commander's pistol, or Mutt's MAC-10. Anyway, yes, I think they may have altered the colors to perhaps make them more visible to the eyes of children or parents with the vaccuum cleaner? Also of consideration is the backyard. How many times did we go into the backyard with our GI Joe stuff, only to lose some of the gray or black pieces? I lost a Flight Pod rocket in the yard because it fell off in flight and dissappeared into the grass. Know what I mean? I suppose that neon colors would prevent that from happening as the object would be easily identifiable in the grass or foilage if it is a neon color. Just my .02. |

Not all of the weapons pack accesories were terrible colors. #1's guns were just a little bit lighter than carded 82's and the backpacks were tan, and they released Tan versions of 82 characters in 83 and 84
Another part of it was too convince kids/parents that these were different than things they already owned.

Maybe it was a factory thing.
If you have bins of parts and you have a certain amount of accessories allocated to a certain number of figures, you may not want to add confusion to the factory works by producing twice the amount of the same color accessories It's probably more to convince consumers it's a new item though |

I think the reasoning behind the different colors was the exact opposite of the affect they had on you. Basically, if kids already had the original accessories, why would they buy these packs? So, by making them slightly different, Hasbro made them something new that kids didn't have just by buying the figures and, thus, made the packs more desirable. It's somewhat backwards logic. But, back then, these items were sold to kids and the logic was designed to get parents to buy their kids more items.
