Ok this is great so far the common themes sound like this to me:
• Men and women of adventure and action • Soldiers • Fighting for good and freedom • A special mission force • A group that has had special training, maybe one could say also very unique training • Defenders not aggressors • Fighting terrorist groups I would add: • Stars of unique training, for example the best or at least in the top 5 of the world of whatever that team member’s skill or unique training is. • A true team approach to solving problems or defeating enemies • A team that individually is great, but together are unstoppable. The combination of all unique skills fighting together as one makes for an unstoppable force. • A team of individuals who all share unwavering grit or courage

While I agree the hamfisted international-ness of the film was rubbish, in my UK world (with the benefit of the wonderful UK Marvel run), GI Joe were only about half American, with a great mix of international characters and most importantly great backstories to go with them (via the filecards & comic). To those of you who are American, you perhaps don't realise how much of a difference this makes to the acceptability and interest of the whole story.
Back to the question - the story is fundamentally one of good vs. evil told via a combinations of the 7 basic plots au Booker.

Just like there is special forces, navy seals, red berets, etc...a few levels above that you'll find GI JOE.

As stated by others the core of joe has been good vs evil. In my Joeverse it has to expand just from being Real American heroes only so I do like the idea of a United nations Anti-terrorism force. But to me it doesn't matter what country you come from we all need to stand up against terror so I guess it all does come back to good vs evil. I stated also that I was trying to modernize my joeverse taking all what has come before and making a contemporary story out of it. That includes the 80's comics and cartoons to what has become today's media and seeing what the result is.

G.I. Joe is the best of the best, fighting against anyone that poses a threat to the safety of the world.
I have no problem at all with the angle Rise of Cobra took, about the team being UN sanctioned. They fought all over the world in the comics and the cartoon. The movie just added a dose of realism by giving them a legal ability to do that. The only fault with the movie was that the Pit wasn't in the US. One other thing that came to mind was about Snake Eyes. I can totally understand why they didn't copy his origin from the comics now. With all the soldiers coming back from the middle east with all sorts of scars, it would be insensitive for them to suggest that if you have scars, you need to wear a mask forever. Hell, look at JR Martinez. The guy acts and won Dancing with the Stars. I know I strayed a bit off topic, but I wanted to say it. |

As a British kid who grew up in Canada, I got into GI Joe in the 80's. Even then it seemed weird that GI Joe toys came with Canadian flag decals, so I got used to not putting any nationality marker on anything. That said, as much as I'd love to see GI Joe as an international force, the term "GI Joe" is quintessentially American and as such I see the team as American, as represented in ARAH Marvel comics. The international stuff that came later was too much of a political correctness exercise for my taste.
And no, my American wife ISN'T standing over my shoulder watching me type this! |

this is easy:
GI Joe is the codename for American's daring, highly trained special mission force. It's purpose, to defend human freedom against Cobra- a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world. There is nothing else that needs to be said. I dunno why this is such a hard concept for hollywood or even hasbro at this point to grasp lol... It's the same for me. |

For me, GI Joe stands as the best hope against a Cobra dictatorship gone rampant with invasions across the world my Joeverse occurs. They are an international team chosen from the finest forces the free world has.
An elite, ad-hoc team where only the best of the best make it. Their skill sets not only set them apart, but define them. Snake Eyes is a master assassin and a legend in hand to hand combat. General Hawk is a strategic genius. Duke demonstrates incredible battlefield awareness and a potent tactical mind, and has received the harshest of training and thrived to become a highly lethal commando operative. Wild Bill is skilled in 3 different types of rotary aircraft and two more that do not officially exist: Not only that, he can field repair them with only the most basic parts. Some members are partisans operating in Cobra Occupied Land conducting guerilla tactics against the Cobra war machine. The forces of Joe are few, stacked as Spartans against an overwhelming foe. Their missions take them deep behind enemy lines, conducting surgical strikes, long range recon and assault (LRRA), and carrying out guerilla operations that prove highly effective against Cobra's tyranny. |
