As an Australian Joe fan I have always liked the international aspect of GI Joe. It made me feel as a kid that even I could be in GI Joe.
So how suprised was I to open up my fresh new copy of the Collectors Club mag to see a bio of the Cobra Night Stalker Officer. She was born in Perth Australia and leads an all female squad of Night Stalkers. Hell Yeah!

I was recently checking out the Action Force/European Missions online. As a kid, I first discovered G.I.Joe as "Action Force" in England and Norway, and my initial exposure to the concept was as an international unit.
It's interesting to see how they've changed familiar Joes to be an international unit, Check out some of the birthplaces and alternate backgrounds. PROFILES I know this isn't cannon as most fans would perceive it, but when you consider that the original comic/filecards were essentially a different world form the original cartoon, and then you look at all the new incarnations of Joe now, it's an interesting and valid take on the franchise. |

Nice! I'll have to read those dossiers in detail later.
T J Bang, do you have any pics of your collection somewhere? I'd love to see some Australian stuff. Were file cards different? I think some or most of the figures released were exactly the same as US versions.

I also like the international aspect. I know a lot of American fans stand fast behind the "Real American Hero" thing, but as a Canadian, I like to be included!
In my "Joe-Verse", I always picture GI Joe starting as a small American SOF unit, then growing into something more company sized (in the '84 and '85 years especially), then taking on international exchange members from Action Force, and other special forces units (Big Ben and so on), then merging with Action Force and accepting other members from other countries, such as the ex-Oktober Guard, etc. Just my own take on the mythos, I guess. Kind of like Rainbow Six, I suppose. I'd love to see another official Canadian in the ranks. I know we've got Backstop, but it'd be nice to have one who wasn't wearing bright yellow pants... There's a wealth of cool international units out there that would inspire some amazing characters and figures. Sure, EVERYONE knows about the SAS, but what about the British SBS, German GSG-9, Canadian JTF-2... Some ex-Israeli forces members might make some excellent female team members. Heck, even lesser known US units like 106th SOAR. I dunno... sometimes it seems like if the Hasbro designers were more interested in doing their homework, instead of just randomly trying to come up with something "cool", we'd get more interesting stuff. You can definitely tell that Hama and the gang back in the early to mid/late eighties knew a LOT about the military. Sometimes I think there's too much comic-book influence these days, more than anything else. Wow, kind of went on a little tangent there...

I don't think fans have a problem with them being international heroes.. I think they just still want them to be known as ARAH.

The world is so integrated now, what with the internets and satellite TV and the Oprah network and what-not. It only makes sense that you'd have a conglomerate of the best soldiers from the entire world. Are there any of the Israeli soldiers in the Joeverse? Because the Israeli special forces is supposed to be one of the best in the world.

I'm OK with G.I.Joe being a US unit, but it would make sense to have international specialists join for at least temporary periods.
Special forces from all different countries work actively together. They train together, they share intel, they go on patrols together. If you need a local guide, interpreter, or an environmental specialist for particularly challenging terrain, it can be very useful to have good relations with your equivalent units from allied countries. For example, I know the Royal Marines train in Norway for mountain/arctic warfare, and I know the Norwegian SF has worked a lot in Afghanistan with Americans - their experience as mountain ranger type troops is useful. I always thought Muskrat seemed like he should be Australian - maybe Recondo and Outback too. Definitely need some Canadians on the team too. I mean we can't just let all the international badasses end up either in Cobra or the French Foreign Legion, can we? ;) |

My main interest is the Red Shadow era of Action Force, so am able to consider that and GI Joe as two seperate entities. Still fun to read my old BATTLE ACTION FORCE comics and realise that in one universe, Flash & Ripcord are English!

I did however think for a long time that Recondo was an Aussie.
