Okay, that's a valid point if they do feel that's the case. They believe the name is more recognizable but feel Roadblock is more interesting. I just find it odd that they think this way because Duke, who's obviously in the comic with the name Duke, in my opinion is just as recognizable as Roadblock, you know what I mean. They both showed up together in the toy line and comics and so that's why I feel that their way of thinking doesn't make sense.
There has always been a Duke, in all the various lines and forms. Roadblock was essentially replaced by Heavy Duty in the later lines, cartoons and Sigma Six.

Troynos, you seem to be OK with all the name switching and so forth for the movie and in the new comic. And I guess that surprizes me because you've been a fan a long time and you know your stuff and you're familiar with the history of all these characters.
So, I guess I'm trying to understand why it doesn't bother you so much in this case. You and I generally agree on most of these Joe topics, especially when it comes to the history of the characters. Why is this one different for you? Tanksmasher, Fogger, Tall Creeper, you and me... we all usually agree on these kinds of issues. What's different this time? Honestly, it seems strange to see the Roadblock name on the 2 figures that just came out.

Not quite sure why it doesn't bother me. Probably because I've been thinking of Heavy Duty (Sigma Six) as Roadblock anyways. The character was more like, and looked more like Roadblock then Heavy Duty. So in my mind I had made that switch a long time ago.

nothing, it is completely arbitrary and the character has no similarities to the original Rip Cord save for his name. there is nothing about the character that screams Rip Cord, or Stalker or any other character either, which made the rationalization that since a black actor was cast it was supposed to be Stalker mind-numbingly stupid. |

Right now it's just a name change. We don't know if the character in the movie will be more Heavy Duty or Roadblock. The comic, so far, has been shown to be Roadblock but with the Heavy Duty name. If the character is still Marvin Hinton, then what's the big deal if he's Heavy Duty or Roadblock? Hawk is still Hawk, even if he's G.I.Joe Hawk, Gen. Abernathy, or Tomahawk. Why are people so upset over the name change of Roadblock (and as of right now, with the information we have, that's all it is, a name change) but not so upset over Shockwave to Shockblast, or Mainframe to Dataframe?

since I am of the same opinion as Troynos, I can answer as well and say no I can't understand. I like the Joe story as a whole, first and foremost, and am not dedicated to any one character more than the other. Heavy Duty is just as much a part of the G.I. Joe story as Roadblock, and no rational argument can be made to the contrary, and as such he has as much "right" to be in the movie or comic or Sigma 6 as Roadblock. Flash is my favorite character, but if Red Spot was put in the comic I wouldn't bat an eye.

The mistake Hasbro made was trying to please two sets of fans with one character.
They should have just used Heavy Duty, since he was currently the most recognizable (and I know this will anger Roadblock fans, but in the Joeverse, he was the more versitile with weapons systems, so Heavy Duty could do more in a sense). Or just used Roadblock in the comic and Heavy Duty in the movie. Here is what I really think happened, and this was based on one of the comments Hama made in one of the first interviews (before there were 3 books). He had commented that the IDW line-up would be very similar to the movie (and he dropped both Heavy Duty and Rip-Cord as beginning cast members). So because of that, Hasbro trying to make a connection between the movie and new comic, Hama wanted to use the Roadblock character but Hasbro tied his hands with the movie connection. So go forward a couple of months, and the copyrights and liscensing and whatever has already been done using Heavy Duty in the comic book, and Hasbro has taken some steps back and isn't having as much a connection between the movie and comic. So now they are stuck (for whatever reason, probably a legal copyright/trademark/usage reason) with the name of Heavy Duty.

Well I'm sorry to say I didn't have time to read all 100+posts so far but my 2 cents. Michael Clarke Duncan should be Roadblock. There are a lot of things in this movie that will be done wrong. One of my biggest complants is that we see Cobra Commander. This being done puts this movie on an expectation level of Inspector Gadget when it showed Dr. Claw. I believe we won't get the good Joe movie until part two. This is the director wanting to make the story his own. And with anyhope Marlon Wayans will receive the same fate as Steven Seagal in Executive Desision
