I thought I'd post this story of mine here for general feedback.
Last week I won this Skystriker auction: GI JOE SKYSTRIKER (XP-14F) 3 3/4" with box 1983 - eBay (item 320315105962 end time Nov-06-08 16:54:38 PST) The item location/shipping summary clearly indicates that Parcel Post shipping costs $8.62. The Paypal payment screen gave me the option of upgrading to Priority Mail for a total of $17, which of course I took advantage of (I find less travel time results in better overall conditions of items). I emailed the seller on Tuesday (Veteran's Day) to confirm that the item had been shipped and he stated the following: "I was not able to ship it priority because they wanted $38. I shipped it pacel post with insurance and I packed it really well and it still cost $17." I replied to the seller about this but it seems to me that if he advertised a shipping upgrade he should have honored the advertised price, even if the actual cost eats into his auction profits. I've had to do this in the past as a seller when I underestimated the actual shipping cost of a heavier item. I asked for a refund of the difference that I shelled out for the upgraded shipping (which I didn't actually receive). In this situation I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I had kept the shipping at the original charge to save money...? Would he have emailed asking for more money? Anyway, I'll post updates here when I hear back from the seller. Maybe he's a member here or someone knows him... Thanks for reading! Sorry it's not as exciting as some other recent posts...

$38 is the real priority shipping. I have shipped one before myself. Its the new postal rates from may. Some people that do not ship large items much are unaware. At least he shipped parcel. I have bought items and the sellers demanded more money.

I think you would have had more leverage if you hadn't shelled out for the extra shipping. All he could do is eat the cost, or default on the auction and lose more than the 9 dollars and change. If all is well when you receive the item, and it did in fact cost the $17 to ship, then you lost nothing and had a good Ebay deal.
Congrats on your win. |

For something that big, you should have told him just to ship UPS. It's cheaper, trackable and insured to $100(?) at no extra charge.

Unfortunately, the internet has made no one responsible for their actions. Ebay is the worst now and there is no recourse really. We are more are less driven to ebay if we hope to find anything we want. Ebay at first appreciated this, but now they have just cornered the market and continue to drive prices up.
The seller demanding you pay more shipping is ust total BS. In the real world that would never fly at any business. If you give someone a price, and win that aucton that creates a contract between the two of you and constitutes a final sale with an agreed upon price. No changes, no extra. Seller on ebay are just using the old internet tough guy routine.

It sucks for him, but the correct thing to do would have been to honor his stated price. I say this as someone who has grossly underestimated shipping costs on eBay myself -- in those cases, I've eaten the losses, because it was my fault for not doing the research and learning how much shipping would actually be. Since he shipped via parcel post, he needs to refund the difference so that you're paying the originally stated parcel post fee.

Yeah, he should have forked it out himself. I've found however that selling and buying items on Amazon is far better than ebay. Though it may not have quite the selection especially for older items but it is more reliable and they automatically charge for shipping and they are pretty right on with a small variance here and there.
We all need to band together and start some competition for ebay somehow.

I have been on both sides of the argument on this problem. I believe a) seller could eat the additional cost if he can afford to b) seller can politely ask for more money for shipping costs (or) c) seller can cancel the sale/contract because it was listed in error (the shipping amount).
As a buyer I am bummed when this happens, but as a seller I am bummed as well, for me and the customer. 99% of the tiem I will eat the shipping, but in certain situations you simply can not do business that way. Hope all goes well for you. |

I have been on both ends as well. When I was the seller, I sold and item to a Canadian, and the postmaster didn't give me the correct postage so I was out about half of my money. I recently bought an item that had $15 in shipping, paid for it, and when it came actual shipping was $25, but the seller ate the difference.
