Yes, it does make me feel older. I remember watching Fawcett on Charlie's Angels. Damn...
I agree with you on your rant. It's kind of similar to how people here can't view the movie without relating it to the ARAH of the past. I've always been able to make the disconnect between the person and their work. There's alot of artists I like that I probably wouldn't be friends with (might even hate personality wise) or agree with their views/beliefs. Not to get too far off (and Mods, this is an okay discussion cause no one here will start flaming anyone) but I'm not a very religious person but I enjoy christian rock music. Musically, it's some of the best stuff out there. I just don't listen to the "message" and just enjoy it for the musical art that it is. With MJ, it's easier because he hasn't done anything in the near past. So I can enjoy his past work (some of it, Smooth Criminal is an awesome song) without his near-past antics getting in the way. As far as I'm concerned, MJ the musician was dead along time ago. So the guy that died was the alleged child molester. Does that make any sense? What do I care who Hama voted for or what his beliefs are? I enjoy his work, and that's all that matters. I'm an architect, so I design buildings. Does my beliefs prevent the clients from working with me? No, they have no clue what my religion is, what my politics are, etc.. They just can see my body of work and hire me (the company I work for) based on that work.

Don't know what it is for the US Army, the Marines or the Air Force, but in the Navy, all the enlisted personnel up to the rank of E-6 are housed together, all the senior NCOs (E-7 to E-9) are housed somewhere else, and the officers (WOs, LDOs, and the commissioned officers) have their own designated barracks

Kidding aside, I'm somewhat conflicted regarding the news of MJ's death. Not a fan of the man, particularly because all the allegations of child molestation that hounded him later in his career have soured me on "MJ the person," but he did put out some of the century's defining popular music, and I think he deserves some measure of posthumous reverence in that regard (although I haven't really been interested in anything he's put out since 1988's Bad).

I'll say this about MJ and then I'm done with the topic. Michael (like the other MJ), meant a *lot*to black Americans (from a business success and mainstream acceptance point of view). Whatever we do know (and almost certainly DON'T know) the man is a legend and his accomplishments go beyond just music.

Oh. I'm not trying to diminish the man's value or significance (although I guess I could have worded that part of my post better). I was just talking about how the news of his death made me reflect on how I've viewed him in recent years what with all the non-music stuff around him. Being neither black nor American (I guess the "zulu" part of my username can throw people off, but "zuludelta" is actually my old ARESCOM radio callsign, based on my initials), I won't even begin to pretend that I understand what his legacy means outside of the music that he created... I think it would just come off as being patronizing to the people to whom Jackson meant so much more to, culturally.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, despite all those misgivings, I think HISStank is still one of the better fan sites for any property, not just GI Joe. I think the mods do a fine job of keeping everything running smoothly for the most part, certainly better than a number of sports sites I used to be active in. I'm actually speaking about the people who are basically celebrating in the other topic, not you, z. Like I said, the people who frequent this topic are pretty respectful to differing opinions and viewpoints. I've been on Hisstank longer than almost all of you guys, but it wasn't until this topic caught my eye that I really participated.
Take a walk through a holocaust museum or pass by the Vietnam Memorial or the Arlington cemeteries--that's moving. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 06-25-2009 at 11:24 PM.. |

I agree with you guys, I spend most my time commenting on this thread. I participate occasionally on some of the other threads, but sometimes they get out of hand quickly, as far as posters taking a superior stance for their opinions. Plus some threads are like subscribing to a twitter blog.
So I love it when some of the other guys show up and I love to answer any question about Joes that I know from any random participant. Hell I think I talk to you guys more than my wife. As we've basically uncovered just about all there is in the filecards, it great that Zulu's and Troynos projects have kept it going. As Far a MJ, well I think he was good until Bad and then I just never cared for the music anymore. But he is perhaps the most popular/Famous musician of our lifetime. He was like a trainwreck you couldn't pull your eyes away from. I remember in all the places I lived growing up (Pakistan, Costa Rica, Zaire) that was the one artist locals would beg for. But I'm old enough that those years coincided with his Mega years. (81-91) Still Those are the years I like to remember him from. Other than that, he now gets to meet his maker. And yes it makes me feel real old. I remember seeing the Wiz on TV when it aired in 78 or 79, and Farrah Fawcett was the epitome of "HOT". Two huge cultural Icons of my youth that everything else seemed to be gauged on...GONE. |

However, I can't say that I'm actually saddened by the death of someone I never knew outside of his music and celebrity status. It just doesn't make sense. I mean, I was disappointed when Heath Ledger died because I really enjoy his work, but I didn't mourn his death. So I can't quite relate when some people start freaking about his passing or on the other extreme end, when they start verbally dancing on his tombstone.
Again, not to speak for Master Thespian, but I think Jackson might have represented something much bigger than celebrity or popular music success to certain segments of the black community. Mourning his passing, for them, probably means more than just grieving for a celebrity who happened to be black. I guess we can all find a particular situation in our lives that allows us to empathize with the people mourning Jackson's passing. For instance, I've never felt a personal kinship with the late George Harrison but I mourned his passing all the same, because his music and his work to highlight the plight of the poor in various areas of Asia represented something that to me, went beyond Harrison's status as a popular figure and celebrity. I imagine that Jackson's success as a visible minority means so much more to certain people than his celebrity, and that's what some people are responding to in the wake of his demise.
