Eels don't have to be of sailor origin. The SBS used to draw from Royal Marines and now they and the SAS just take people out of a common selection, so the Eels could similarly just draw straight from the blue shirt/viper crowd.
Another way to look at them is as specialists within a blue shirt/viper unit. Say each company has a Snow Serpent, a Rock Viper and a Jungle Viper to provide the advice and expertise to that company wherever they go. As an aside, I think Rock Vipers have to be among the dumbest troops around (not conceptually, but they must recruit from actual morons). The file card says that on the last day of training they get dropped off on a 500 foot mesa with 250 feet of rope and are told only 50% will make it - so they look for soft dirt to land in. I can read that two ways: either the whole group only gets 250 feet of rope, in which case I want to know who can survive a 250 foot drop, or they each get 250 feet of rope and are too dumb to buddy up and lash a couple of ropes together. For some reason I'm reminded of the old Clint Eastwood movie The Eiger Sanction. I can't find a clip of the scene, but at one point he's training, climbing mesas, and at the top of one his partner asks if he wants a beer. Clint says anyone would be crazy to haul beer up the rock. His buddy agrees: "I'm not stupid. It's in YOUR pack!" https://rockclimbinglife.wordpress.c...iger-sanction/ |

I agree with Low Tech "Eels don't have to be of sailor origin." The US Army has Divers of their own, Combat units usually has an NCO or CPL cross trained in Air Assault, Combat Life Savers (Keep you Alive till a Medic or Medevac gets there), Demolitions, Mountain Climbing, Ranger Training and other specialized training that they can pass their training and fieldcraft to other soldiers in the unit.
Rock Vipers can climb down a 500 ft cliff with 250 ft rope, if they have enough camming devices (used to wedge into the rock) and climb down the cliff 100 ft sections at a time (of course it would take longer and be more physically demanding but it can be done) |

I wonder how does the Special Boat Service break out? Like SAS?
Do they have MFF guys like Para-vipers? Do they have Mountain troop like Snow Serpents? Do they need a separate Scuba team or is extra training for the SCUBA troops? Eel, Moray, Hydro? Is there a Mobility troop? Ice-Vipers,or is it Heavy Weapons boat operators team? Lampreys or Swamp-Vipers?

My breakdown for Cobra SOF units. (We haven't done this in a while)
Elite-Vipers = Delta Para-vipers = DEVGRU Crimson Guards = SAD Range-Vipers = Green Berets Jungle-Vipers = Marine Recon Alley-vipers = SAS Eels/Snow Serpents = SEALS Shock Trooper = SWAT (but maybe GSG-9) Night-Vipers = like an HRT team. Pit-Viper = not sure but I always loved these guys Elite Horsemen? Mobility troops for the other Tier 1 guys coming from Motor-Vipers? Cobra Coils? Regular “Viper" = Ranger Most of the Weapons Vipers, Technical Vipers, and Environmental Vipers have to go through Viper school and become a Viper first. Still not sure how the Weapons Vipers get deployed. Are they just a mix weapons squad in every platoon? Like a SAW, HEAT, FRAG, SHOCK fighting as a unit? I can see a Techie team of Special Ops guys deployed for Forward Observer / Signal Int not sure if it would be a mix of a Tele, Techno, Cyber, Data, Shadow? Shock-Viper and Shadow-Viper need a bit of a makeover. Having a Sand-Viper and a Desert-Viper is dumb Same with Eel, Moray, Hydro. I liked the idea of CLAWS, but as what I don't know. NEO-VIPERS? Not sure either.

Not sure either. Remember, Cobra is a terrorist organization so the units have a bit of a different role than standing armies. So maybe instead of having a standing hostage rescue team, they have a standing prison-break team, with teams cycling through the shock trooper role, and they cycle through the pit viper role for large scale robbery (banks and jewelry) to fund the cause. For Elite-Vipers, I always thought they were misnamed and figured they were a sub-division of the Iron Grenadiers. And for the seeming overlap of names/roles, perhaps that's the Cobra equivalent of changing up the name of SOF Task Forces: it's just a deception ploy. |

I agree with that last statement... and just completely irrelevant to anything we have discussed. I use the POC/ 50th iron grenadier as a heavy weapons guy attached to Cobra units ( Since I don't have SAW Vipers) ... they ARE Iron grenadiers, but Cobra contracts them to use as quartermaster and heavy weapon guys for their standing infantry units.

I guess it all depends on the size of the Cobra Military? 20,000? 40,000? 60,000? One can see why 15,000 ISIS fighters is a problem. The entire Czech Military is 26,000 strong (Active, reserve, Paramilitary).
US Special Forces (Green Berets) is about 7,000 personnel alone. I am considering this one of the largest total SOF units worldwide. If one only considers Active duty military Belgium is 30,000 personel and Canada is 66,000. I doubt Cobra is that big, but I can see Cobra being about 20,000-30,000. Still I like breaking them into these Smaller redundant units. The US has more than 20 special operations units, but I would say a Dozen overall units. My Cobraverse has maybe even more. I might be more like the Israeli Defense force set up where some recon units just operate in different areas, but they are essentially Recon. IN Cobra Every Unit Commander trying to make a name for himself to get ahead. I see the Alley-Vipers, Shock Troopers, and Night Vipers as a bit redundant, but they were created at different times and under different leadership. I see many of the Units with "Viper" as more of the Special operations guys. Under Serpentor and Overlord. They like those type of Alpha Males. Cobra commander is using sheer volume so the Shock Troopers come out of the Blue Shirts. Probably on par with Alley Vipers but different training and heritage. More Para-military than Special Forces pipeline. Elite Vipers I have under Darklon. Cobra needed a unit of Tier 1 guys and this is what Darklon came up with. Sort of along the lines of a IG heritage but not exactly. I see Elite, and Para as the Tier 1 guys. Maybe Alley-Vipers as well. PIT-Vipers asn bank robbers seems like a perfect role. I can see Eels, Morays, Hydro, and Snow Serpents all part of the same force each with different roles.

I am still not sure how the Weapons Viper would be deployed. What does everyone else do with their, FRAG, SAW, HEAT vipers? Is it a separate track for Vipers? Is it a promotion? Maybe it's a step towards advancement?
Something Like one has to do Specialized Viper training before making it to Staff Sgt. or something. If you joine one of the Environmental teams you might not come back over to regular Viper corps, but the weapons vipers can rotate back through sooner, so it's faster to get promoted? In this scenario, a Cobra Viper Platoon would have 3 normal squads an one weapons team or maybe a SAW and a FRAG on every team with a team of HEAT back at HQs? Not sure where to put FLAK and Laser Vipers? Like the Signals Regiment I can see a team with Techno, Tele, Cyber, Data, Shadow and maybe Laser Vipers? forward deployed. List of Vipers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viper_(G.I._Joe) In case you can't remember them all
