the way I'm treating GI Joe in my fan-fic is that, since they were reinstated in 1995, they are a special military task-force operating under direct Presidential control outside the usual chain of command and with a force structure unlike anything else. Hawk is the CO and reports to the President, but the Joes have to beg, borrow and cajole the regular forces to get kit, range time (for flight exercises at RED FLAG or wherever) and so on.
Captain Falcon leads the SF unit of Green Berets/Delta types: Recoil, Hit&Run, Alpha Dog, Spearhead, Footloose and Beach Head. Torpedo leads the SEAL team: Wet Suit, Wet Down, Tracker, Night Fox, Lone Star and Depthcharge with Shipwreck as SWCC. Captain Grid-Iron leads the infantry team which basically comprises the fire-support element and the other non-SF qualified guys. Sky Patrol is a six-man paratroop recon/Pathfinder team Marine Raiders is a six-man amphibious recon team Major Storm leads the mobile artillery/mechanised assault unit - basically the M1A2 Abrams tanks, Wolverine missile tanks and Armadillo mini-tanks, Cover Girl, Clutch, Skidmark, Rampage, Rollbar, Steeler, Switch Gears, Thunderwing, etc. There's then a Naval ops unit (Cutter, Topside, Rampart in a WHALE), an Arctic ops team headed by Snow Job (Frostbite, Cold Front, Windchill, Sub Zero, Blizzard etc), an extreme conditions unit (Dusty, Big Brawler, Outback, Recondo, Pathfinder, Muskrat), an EOD team, a MP/K9 unit (Shockwave, Wide Scope, Mutt, Surefire, Law), a medical team (Lifeline, Med Alert, Stretcher, Guardian Angel, Swimfin and Splashdown) and then the Air Wing - which is not really a wing - Ace leads Barrel Roll, Bombstrike, Dogfight, Skystriker, Freestyle and Ghost Rider in the fighter squadron (with three OCs), while Wild Bill leads Lift Ticket, Windmill, Updraft, Major Altitude and some OCs in the helo squad. Stalker is senior NCO since Duke retired. General Flagg is XO, Col. Courage is Ops officer.

You know this makes a lot of sense, as it would be a separate unit, although would they fall into Army like Delta Force? I am assuming when Force Recon Marines join Delta they switch to Army and start sporting Green Berets?
I wonder what ISA does? What would probably make sense is the Joes would constantly be rotating through and back to their parent units. Especially if it's a Task Force setup. Maybe serve 18 months and then back to the Rangers for example. Maybe the Joes always have a (Marine, SEAL, Green Beret, Ranger) detail and guys cycle through or a whole SEAL Squad perhaps cycles through. Quote:
SAS Squadrons are reportedly 60 man units (sometimes augmented by cooks, drivers, armorers, specialists etc), 16 man Troops, 4 man Patrols. However, I recently picked up 'The SAS Combat Handbook' and in the preface the author mentioned that since 9/11, Patrols are now generally 6 man units to account for all the extra tech gear they use now.
As for the Joes set up, I guess in the end, it depends on what kind of mission the Joes perform in your 'verse. The problem I've been having over the years in trying to make my Joeverse 'fit' is that it doesn't and won't fit any particular unit or formation. In one of the last discussions in Zulu's thread he talked about how 'form follows function', it didn't really register with me at the time but over the years, I ended up in the same kind of problems he did (although not so detailed as his obviously). I kept trying to make it a mishmash of this and that and thus it didn't seem to work and I would keep going back to the drawing board. I did read in Zulu's thread that he was changing the scope of the Joes mission. I think his last idea was making them more of a unit that hunted down organizations that sold illegal weapons to nations or something to that affect. I am basing my Joe team along similar lines, this way they cross paths with MARS and Cobra without being just committed to those two organizations. In fact my fan-fic starts out with the Joe team reclaiming some MARS-manufactured surface-to-air missiles and launchers from a local arms dealer in Nigeria. The seller stole them from the government (who recently purchased them from MARS) and was going to sell them to the terrorist organization Boko Harum. Due to a double-cross the location of the weapons is alerted to the Americans and the Nigerian government agrees to let the Joe team recapture the weapons. This starts the Joe team with doing the mission they were formed to do (take back stolen weapons) and cross paths with MARS (and eventually Cobra, as the double-crosser is the Cobra agent Scarface). I just need to formulate how my team is structured so I know which characters to introduce. Technically I have already written these parts but I keep changing the characters introduced to reflect my ever-changing structure. lol |

I think I have those three with the Urban team with a squad of PIT troopers. Separate from the rest of Steel Brigade who is with the Special Weapons Force.
I realize now I didn't consider the PIT in my set up. I usually make it part of the Arctic Team with the Oktober Guard. |

Nice I added Billdocker as well. I am sort of assuming those Higher level officers come from separate Commands but collectively fund and run the Joes as we know them. Support for the Joes is assigned to the theater Commander they are operating in. The Theater commander is usually temporarily replaced by one of the Brigadier Joe Generals that heads each Squadron.
Essentially lets say the Joes need to go to Somalia, part of AFRICOM. The local theater commander might be a Colonel. (Although I think this would be Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa Joint Commmand under a Major General.) Gen Rey shows up and is given temporary command, Because Major General Sharpe who is a Deputy AFRICOM commander says so. Rey and his senior staff set up a headquarters but including the commanders on site. However his Sqaudron, under a Lt. Colonel most likely, gets all the action. Rey is just there to make sure they get all the support they need. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 09-02-2015 at 11:39 PM.. |

Hawk - CO
Flagg (the figure from the BC era) - 2IC Col. Courage - Operations Stalker - senior NCO Falcon - SF team Cap. Grid-Iron - Infatry Major Storm - Mech Assault Ace - Air Wing Cutter - Naval Ops Torpedo - SEAL leader Snow Job - Arctic leader Recondo - Extreme Conditions leader Tripwire - EOD leader Lifeline - Medic leader Surefire - MP leader Chuckles - Intelligence (with Dial Tone, Hard Drive & Mainframe providing SigInt and Cyber security) total membership is somewhere under 200 not including the Steel Brigade which is partly under CIA control, as they took the network of cells over when the Joes were stood down. |

I'm trying to flesh out my Squadron headquarters element and was looking for suggestions. I am structuring it similar to Delta (which I have no idea how many people make up a HQ in a Sabre Squadron). From reading Dalton Fury's book I got:
Squadron Commander Squadron Sergeant Major Squadron Operations Officer Squadron Operations Sergeant Has anyone heard what other positions make up a Delta Sabre Squadron HQ? My A Squadron HQ is made up of Hawk (Commander), Duke (SgtMajor), and I want Flint in there somewhere as well. He is technically not an officer so am not sure making him the Ops Officer is practical or not. Thoughts? |

It sounds like they are operating like a special forces ODB team which is a Major, Captain, CW-3, Sgt Major, E-8 operations Sgt, and a intelligence Sgt.

I figured there were a few more support personel but I didn't know what positions that would be. Like is the Supply Sgt a Green Beret? Are all the COmmunication Sgts Green Berets?
Also How much bigger of a Headquarters section would a ODC team be?
