I have thought that Cobra is racist too for the same reasons they all seem to be white guys not that they are the Klan or anything but amongst other things. I had to pop in on this cuz I have thought that for years but never talked about it before. And I am aware that there were some black troopers a while back but for the most part they are whiteys.

I think many have the same view, since that was usually how they were portrayed. Especially in the cartoons. Less people get upset when the bad guys are white. We've all seen tons of movies and cartoons.
Still I never picked up on that. Like Zulu I thought Destro was a black guy until later on in the comics when the Iron Grendiers burst on the scene. I asked this before but it didn't get much traction. Do you think the Iron Grenadiers was Hasbro's creation or Larry? |

That wasn't my point.
It's more to do with the voice acting: if I hadn't read Destro's filecard and the comics, there's nothing at all in the way he was voiced in the cartoon that suggested he was Scots (or at least my childhood idea of how Scotsmen sounded, shaped by hearing Disney's Scrooge McDuck and Star Trek's Scotty ). And he did sound like a classically-trained black guy (think James Earl Jones), because surprise, surprise, the guy who voiced him, soap opera stand-by Arthur Burghardt, is actually a black dude. This is sort of the counterpoint to the Baroness. According to Larry Hama, he always intended the Baroness to be a rich, spoiled, American dilettante who joined some European revolutionary group or other before hooking up with Cobra. So he was pretty surprised to see/hear the character voiced with a thick pseudo-Slavic accent in the very first GI Joe cartoon mini-series. By the time Hasbro had OK'ed a Baroness figure, the "Euro-Baroness" was already accepted as the canon version so Hama had to write in that she was the daughter of European aristocrats in the production filecard. Hey have you guys seen the frontpage article about IDW is adding Serpentor and Crystal Ball to Cobra? I wonder how closely Serpentor will be a mix of some of you guys' perception of how a real world Serpentor could work. My bet he's a mix of Troy's Gen Rey and Zulu's Corporate CEO.

Depends on what you mean by "created." In terms of character design, Hama didn't really have a lot of input. The only character that he's responsible for (along with artist and fellow Vietnam vet Herb Trimpe), in terms of visual design as far as I know, is the Baroness (she was the first comic book character that made the leap to toy form, instead of vice-versa). Between 1982 and the early part of 1988, all of the action figure designs were the work of lead designer Ron Rudat and his team of artists. But it was Hama who received the prototype figures/character sheets and had to make sense of the designs within the context of the comics and the world of the filecards.

Interesting. I'm cautiously optimistic with how this'll pan out. If Christos Gage will be handling the writing, I'm in.

Well then kudos to Hasbro for the Grenadiers. Boo to a few other concepts but one never knows unless you try. Still I see the creation of the Grenadiers as a big step for the Hasbro design team, as they are not just making toys.
So do the Grenadiers grow out of Destro's "cult of personality" as developed by Larry? Or Does Rudat figure this MARS Corp. has to be bigger? Because Cartoon Destro, never really had his own troops until DIC. The Grenadiers show up at the end of the Civil War correct? |

Maybe a little of both. Rudat probably saw what Hama was doing in the comics, having Destro leave Cobra and revealing that Destro has his own private army (this happens in issue #57, about a year before the Iron Grenadiers toys appear in retail) and decided to run with it and designed the Iron Grenadier toys to take advantage of the direction Hama was taking the comics. Alternatively, it's possible that Hama had been informed of Hasbro's plans to spin Destro off into his own toy sub-line, and he began planting the seeds for the stories that would eventually culminate in the Iron Grenadiers' debut in issue #69. There's really no way to tell except to ask both Hama and Rudat, and I'm willing to bet both guys have probably forgotten who did what.
