I was a cub scout. Does that count for anything?

Haven't been posting new composite images as of late because I've been rethinking the whole project. As much as I enjoy the collaborative aspect of working "in public" as it were, I think in my rush to take in everybody's ideas and suggestions, I ended up losing sight of the "more realistic" mandate I set for myself. This became more readily apparent to me as I sat down earlier this week to try and collate everything and to edit/update the text portions of the reference bible. The text portions were as I'd written them originally (almost 2 years to the day). In it, the Joes had no organic fixed-wing assets. As seen in the diagram I posted a few pages ago, the Joe team was supposed to be subordinate to JSOC, and thus, like Delta and DEVGRU, relied on JSOC's Joint Aviation Unit for clandestine long range fixed-wing transport.
Anyway, I'm rolling back the organization to that earlier version, whilst still incorporating most of the suggestions you guys have offered up here. It's not a drastic change from what I've posted before, but it will be scaled down in some ways (no more fixed wing assets) while expanded in others (I'm adding a reduced rifle platoon to supplement the first assault platoon): I've already updated many of the filecards to reflect those changes (the ones I've updated so far to reflect the organizational changes: Airborne, Blizzard, Chuckles, Clutch, Crankcase, Grid-Iron, Hardtop, Jinx, Recondo, Starduster, Steamroller, Super Trooper, Wild Card) Additionally, I've updated some of the images as necessary (replaced Airborne's helicopter crewman's helmet with a more traditional infantry helmet, for instance, since I've now got him as a detached assault trooper from the 101st Airborne, instead of a Night Stalker): There are a bunch of other minor changes I've done (some barely noticeable), but nothing that deserves their own post, so I'll just leave it up to you guys to notice the chages as you come across them. Also, here's Downtown and an updated GI Jane (who says I don't take to heart every single one of your comments and criticisms?): |

Wow, you've been busy. A couple of notes to get out of the way first:
-You have Chuckles listed twice (I'm assuming one of those should be Mercer). -You notated that you would be changing Psyche Out, but you left him off your final list. I'm glad to see Backblast, Long Range (Garcia?) and the various winter weather guys return. SPARKS! SHOOTER! Nice additions. Jane is an age appropriate correction and looks better for it, and Downtown looks great. I'm loving that you're moving the more of the characters where the action is. Oh, and the unit identifier stuff looks killer. Question time: -Why did you remove Major Strom and Rapid Fire? -Why doesn't the new platoon (love the addition, btw) get a Machine Gun Squad? EDIT: As for the question mark (grenadier), you could use Mirage in that spot. Last edited by Master Thespian; 06-20-2009 at 05:21 PM.. |

I wasn't really feeling them, to be honest. I felt that they were somewhat redundant, in terms of function and in visual design, to other Joes I'd already made or had plans of making that have been in play much longer than either character. Quote:
I was sort of hoping of getting an "Easter Egg" type character in there from the cartoons or the old-school comics (sort of like how I used Big Lob, or how I'll be using Sparks and Shooter), but I couldn't come up with one. I'll definitely take Mirage into consideration, but you (or anybody else) got any other suggestions that might fit the "Easter Egg' concept better? |

I went with a reduced manpower allocation to keep it relatively small and light, though...

EDIT: It just occurred to me that you have a chance to correct a wrong in the G.I. Joe universe by creating a Marine Officer (something I never noticed until I read oliverbox's signature). Since Sparks never had a filecard, converting him could easily rectify that oversight. ;) Last edited by Master Thespian; 06-20-2009 at 06:12 PM.. |

Besides Mirage, there are two other unused names out there: Cool Breeze and Mangler. Hell, you could use all three and make the others part of a new Machine Gun Squad if you wanted (of course you'd need two more guys to do that) or squeeze them in onto a team somewhere else.

Never really was familiar with Cool Breeze (he appeared a few issues after I'd dropped the comics). Mangler sounds like a good addition, although his claim to fame as "the dead asshole" on the team might unduly influence my design for him. I'm also tentatively considering using Lowball, Peaches, and Jonesy (from GI Joe Special Missions #5) as helicopter crew chiefs/crewmembers, but they'll be low-priority, I'll-make-them-after-I've-finished-everything-else type additions.

I think after those six, there aren't really any NCOs left from the ARAH days other than the BF2000, Ninja Force and famous guys (there are a bunch of officers, but it's not like you need any of them + you have enough officers as is, I think). But I *know* you don't wanna go there (and I really don't want you to either).

There was Agent Anderson from GI Joe Special Missions (just have to dig out my old copy of issue 15 cause I've pretty much forgotten what he looks like)... I think I can use him as part of the external support cell to complement Snake-Eyes as another Paramilitary Ops Officer.
Except those famous dudes and Ninja Force. Seriously. |
