Interesting point. I remember watching a documentary a couple of years back about how some LA-area gangs actually encourage their members (the ones who don't have rap sheets that would prevent them from enlisting) to sign up for military service, cause it's a convenient way for them to get professional combat training and experience. Maybe a modern version of Stalker would have signed up with that intent in mind, but ended up getting "converted" once he actually started serving.

Right. If they cared more about the characters and their stories, they'd probably attract more interest. But this comes second to getting the product out there. Sad. Much like Lucas who forgot about character and story development and simply threw millions of dollars in special effects at his fans in the SW prequels. The story and characters must come first. They're the foundational. Without them, nothing else matters.

I guess you take what you can get with a volunteer army during wartime/occupation.

I love the 7-pack figure, but the only thing that really gets me is Wetsuit. Why didn't they create his original helmet? This set him apart from Torpedo, whom they've simply repainted this time to make Wetsuit. Would it have really cost that much more to make a helmet? Hell they could have used the Eel's helmet.

I never had the original Wet Suit so the helmet thing.. never noticed it. I think Wet-Suit, I think the colors, which the 7-pack figure has.

The problems with the shifting and inconsistent GI Joe ranks over the years can probably be partially traced to all the changes the Army has gone through in terms of enlisted grade hierarchy. When the ARAH Joes were originally introduced, the Army still used the prarallel specialist grades alongside the "standard" Army enlisted grades. Back then, the E-4 pay grade could either refer to a "Specialist 3rd class" or a corporal. An E-5 was either a "Specialist 2nd class" or a sergeant, an E-6 was a "Specialist 1st class" or a staff sergeant, and E-7 was the pay grade designation for either a "Master Specialist" or a master sergeant. The difference between the specialist ranks and the conventional ranks is that specialists are technical experts and are paid as such, but aren't considered "leaders" in a command sense. That's an important distinction. A Master Specialist and a Master Sergeant get paid the same salary, but the Master Specialist isn't considered an NCO and would be "outranked" by a corporal in most contexts and settings outside of his field. This is probably why Hama seemed to go out of his way to indicate which E-4s and E-5s were "specialists" in some of the early filecards. The Army scrapped the specialist system sometime in the 1980s though, with the only remnant today being the E-4 pay grade Specialist rank. Now, a bachelor's degree holder who graduates from basic training automatically gets the Specialist rank as their entry rank, putting him/her in the same pay-grade as a corporal, but without the same leadership responsibilites (since they don't have the same amount of military experience as corporals, who've had to work their way up from E-1). |

Yeah, all these name changes are seriously screwing up the mythos. Roadblock is Heavy Duty, Dial-Tone is a girl, Ripcord is Altitude...
And they don't know the difference between an E4 and an E5, not to mention they've changed the ranks of classic Joes for no reason, like Mutt, who went from Sp-5 to E6, and Tiger Force Duke, who apparently got demoted to E6. |

I'm staying away from the Basketball subject since my powerhouse Detroit Pistons had to be broken up to level the playing field.

Hey guys, have y'all seen these 7 pack file cards? They turned Free Fall into "Spc Airborne". I'm not overly thrilled with that. I guess "Wallace Weems" was being used for the movie... but still, Free Fall is a great name and character on his own. I almost wish we had gotten a 25th Free Fall instead.

But yeah, I'm kind of pissed that they had to merge/change 4 characters (Ripcord, Freefall, Major Altitude and Sky Patrol Altitude) just so the fans could get their classic Ripcord. I was fine with Ripcord being black and being movie-ized. Didn't bother me in the slightest. I just don't understand why they used Freefall's name and data but didn't name the figure Freefall. I know they did the look just to please the fans.
