I figure the Joes would be tapped from the Spec Op community. It would take someone very special to come to the Joe unit from a non-Spec Ops unit.
Let's take Grunt for example. Why would you pick a non-ranger qualified infantryman when you could get a ranger qualified infantryman (which would be a regular infantryman with even more training). It doesn't make sense. So you figure someone like Grunt has to be at least ranger qualified.

Hey Troynos, I may have asked this before, but do you think the DDP GI Joe comics (2001 series) are worth buying. The IDW stuff has gotten me hooked and I want to read more of the previous Joe comics but didn't know how good they were. I saw that issues 30 and 31 have Claymore in them and I've always wanted to read a story with him in it. The cover art on these comics look interesting but how are the stories and pencilwork? |

Forget about it, he's been a Ranger so long that he's probably authorized to wear the Diamond shaped Ranger patch from WWII. He's definitely a Ranger. In my mind, Duke personifies the ideal of "U.S. Army Airborne Ranger." I know he's Special Forces, and I bet he's a heck of a ODA NCO, but I bet he came to SF straight from the Regiment and that his ODA Team was always a little more "Spit & Polish" and "High & Tight" than the others in his Group.

I agree, I feel that most if not all the Joes should come from Spec Ops. Re-read Breaker's file card and you get the impression that he was Spec Ops. The paygrades are what confuse everyone. Falcon should be a Captain, Claymore probably a Major, and most Joes should at least be E5 or higher.

I saw that issues 30 and 31 have Claymore in them and I've always wanted to read a story with him in it. The cover art on these comics look interesting but how are the stories and pencilwork? Also, I hope you don't mind me offering my opinion. I know you asked Troynos, but I own every Joe comic, including everything by DDP. In my opinion, if you can get a good deal, then you might enjoy them. Not every issue was great, and the beginning of the series was pretty bad. The first four issues had terrible art work. But it got better, and by the end, it really wasn't bad. I think we all tend to forget that there were plenty of bad Marvel Issues... and the end of that series was pretty bad. All in all, DDP got a lot of things right and did a lot of things really well. The "Frontline" series, which was sort of like the old Marvel "Special Missions" series, was pretty good: the 4 issue story arc about Chuckles was fantastic, and it ties back to the early days of the Marvel series. The General Rey story line is really interesting, and they do have cameos from cool minor characters, like Claymore, that are really good. My advice is this: get it if you can. You'll enjoy it. It's not the best thing ever written, but neither was the Marvel series, and IDW isn't perfect either. I think you'll enjoy it. Just my opinion, but I know you didn't ask for it. Sorry for intruding.

Thanks OB, I didn't know you had all the Joe issues. I directed the question to Troy because I know the man's got a virtual comic shop in his house. I was thinking of buying them from smalljoes because I can get most of em for a dollar a piece and the missing ones for a little more at another store. But I didn't want to bother if the stories were just trash. I assumed they wouldn't be perfect but just wanted a little feedback. I think I'll go ahead and get them then. So Frontline is better, you think? I wasn't even considering these although the cover art looks great on some of them.

Also, what did you think of the DDP silent issue #21? Does it even compare to Marvel's issue 21?

DDP was okay. Not the biggest fan but they aren't horrible. The best DDP is probably on par with the middle-of-the-road Marvel. Frontline was pretty good. The Special Missions issues were pretty good. Hama's Declassified was good. I can't stand SE: Declassified.
Scarlett: Declassified is good as it gives a good way for her to acquire the skills she did with the restrictions of the military. America's Elite is okay. It destroys characterization but it's not bad in and out of itself. Skip Reloaded. Load of garbage, even Dixon's issues. I didn't read Hama's Storm Shadow series.

Agree. All Joes should be at least an E5.

A LOT of people really liked the DDP 12 issue finale: WWIII. I didn't think it was all that great. There were some cool moments and sub plots, but it just dragged on, and there was a lot of RetConning. Some guys hate the DDP stuff. I used to hate it until I went back and reread the entire Marvel Run. Hama was great, especially early on. And his style is certainly the way I like Joe to read, but I was also a kid when I read Hama's stuff, and it carved an impression on me. If I had read DDP as a kid, who knows how I would feel? In retrospect, I think DDP stands as strong as the Marvel run in a lot of ways. Overall, I'd say that I'm glad it's over, but it wasn't a bad ride.
