Man seems like everyone is back! Now since I missed most of the day I got 6 pages to go through.
As far as Chuckles being a CIA man and a college grad. True the CIA wants their newest recruits to be College educated. But old school CIA guys who are so old school they built the old school didn't have to be college grads. I know three old timers all ex-CIA not one if them spent more than a year in Community college before they failed out and had to join the military. 2 marines one Army. They finished up as Directors or Deputy Directors with 25-30 years for the agency. I have all the Air Commandos Troynos. They are sort of lame I think becuase the colors. But I remember getting the Spirit and being so excited he was now a Staff Sgt. and sort of recognized as a leader. I only recently picked up Cloudburst and Skymate. Makes for a decent sized airborne unit if you add the Sky Patrol guys and the random other 6 air assualt guys. I had bought the AirDevil back in 91 and I thought he was pretty cool. But a couple of years ago I went nuts and picked up 12 Night Vultures. (Why is the cobra air division units so partial to Purple?) |

;) Sorry, buddy. I didn't mean to cause problems for your Joeverse. Blame Hasbro... giving Grand Slam a glider was their idea. and he's such a good fit for a spotter that it's sick!

But a couple of years ago I went nuts and picked up 12 Night Vultures. (Why is the cobra air division units so partial to Purple?) I really like the Air Commandos. I know the colors are kind of wild, but it was the early 1990's. I do like the characters, and the gliders themselves are pretty cool. It was a great concept. I really like them as a Sub-Team. I use them for recon missions... sort of like Sky Patrol but separate. I also hear what you're saying about the CIA. Certainly in the old days, a lot of the guys who were left over from the OSS were soldiers, not scholars. However, there has always been a strong contingent among the leaders of the Agency of Harvard and Yale graduates. Chuckles came to the Joes in 1987, by that time the Agency was looking for well educated guys. It's certainly true that many of the Operatives in the SAD are former commandos who may not have Ivy League educations. I'm not saying Chuckles needs an Ivy League Education. Chuckles is more than a commando. He's something of a field agent, a case officer, and a commando. He's well rounded with a lot of language skills. And I don't think it's ridiculous to think of him as a man with a College education. If he attended a good, solid, public University like Univ. of Arkansas or Florida, it would have afforded him the opportunity to learn a lot skills that would help him as an agent: Going to Frat formals, working extra jobs to pay tuition, going out with girls, managing his money, trying to find time to work out and study, Dealing with diverse people from all sorts of back grounds, etc. Those kinds of experiences just don't really come up in regular Military Police Training... Chuckles, with his crazy Hawaiian shirts, had to learn a little swagger and charm. That's just the way I see it, but there's also this... The Joe team is the best of the best, and though I'm sure there are soldiers out there - very good soldiers - who don't have impressive academic records, I think the Joes would have a lot of soldiers that do have great academic records. Spirit has a Ph.D., Airborne is a Lawyer, and Doc has an Ivy League medical degree... since the begining, the Joes have recruited highly intelligent scholars. Chuckles is in Intelligence. The main Intel Officers I know are Claymore (Dartmouth) and Psyche-Out (Berkley); they're pretty well educated. Lady Jaye, perhaps one of the most famous intel operatives on the Joe Team, went to Bryn Mawr and has a graduate degree from Trinity College... my point is that the Intelligence Operatives on the Joe team are just that: very intelligent. It stands to reason, then, that Chuckles would have a college education. Hawk went to West Point and did very well... obviously he values higher education. If you were Hawk, and you were recruiting an intel agent for the most elite unit in the world, wouldn't you get the smartest guy available? Obviously it's a matter of conjecture. Zuludelta absolutely has a right to interpret the Joeverse anyway that is best for him, especially on a matter that is not clear in the file cards. And I enjoy his work immensely.

It seems to me (and zulu can correct me if I'm wrong) that his filecard project isn't really some continuation of the Joe universe in the Marvel series or even the old toy Joe team. It's a recreation of all of the 82-90 characters in modern timeline using only the original filecards, the character's overall status in the mythos and his organizational charts as reference points.
The filecards I'm making aren't intended to be strict, set-in-stone versions of the characters, but a resource for other fans who want a more realistic bent for their Joe-verse, a starting point and a touchstone for their own personal creative endeavours. |

Yep, that's pretty much what it is. It's a recreation, a modern recontextualization of what, for me, are the definitive features of the 1982-1990 GI Joe characters. So my take on Stalker and Snake-Eyes, for example, doesn't have them as Vietnam War veterans... think of them more as existing on a sliding time scale, where the timeline references continually shift with our concept of "the present." So, if the classic and canon Snake-Eyes and Stalker were veterans of a Southeast Asian conflict (presumably the Vietnam War) some 12 to 15 years before their joining the GI Joe team, my version of Snake-Eyes and Stalker are veterans of some foreign conflict 12 to 15 years removed from our current definition of "the present." That would place them, maybe in the US/NATO-led military action in the Balkan states during the mid-to-late 1990s. This way, they will always exist in their "prime" so to speak, the way they were originally envisioned.
The filecards I'm making aren't intended to be strict, set-in-stone versions of the characters, but a resource for other fans who want a more realistic bent for their Joe-verse, a starting point and a touchstone for their own personal creative endeavours. |

That's the nice thing about the Joes. Even with the details and such in the filecards, it's still very wide open to interpretation and exploration.

To add to Oliver's list.
GIJoe Doc (Carla) - Wayne State University Dr. Link - University of Pennsylvania HardDrive - MIT at 18 years old Jinx - Bryn Mawr Skystriker - Air Force Academy You know who went to Clemson? Obviously the officers all went to college for the most part but we don't know where. There are a few other enlisted guys who mention College but not where. Like Doubleblast and Checkpoint. These are the later years so whoever is writing them at that time feel the need to throw it in. |
