It was probably you, Oliver. Stalker has always been one of my favorite characters in the whole of the Joe mythos. Partly due to his somewhat checkered background. It may not be totally accurate, but I like to imagine him as one of those guys who was given the choice of prison or Vietnam (I know they did that during the Korean War). He chooses Nam and not only gets by as a soldier but he excells at it.
I once new a Master Sergeant in the Cavalry, MSG Hickey, who said that he had been faced with that same choice when he was 18. He chose the Army and excelled - obviously, because he retired as as Sergeant Major. I think that in the enlisted ranks, often the structure provided, the physical challenges and the mental discipline, helps a lot of young men. Stalker was probably a really athletic and street smart kid. The Army gave him a challenge and a structure by which to excel. The military can give a lot of kids an environment and opportunity to put their talent to good use and become responsible citizens. This is me being a conservative - no shock to anyone, I'm sure - but I've often felt that one of the best programs for inner city youth to get out of poverty and the cycle of socio-economic trouble was not the welfare system, or really even public education - rather, it was the recruiter's office. Because even college doesn't really teach what the military offers: Self respect, service to others, leadership, and personal responsibility. If a person learns those things, they won't just be smarter, they will be better people and better citizens.

That Ranger Roll reminds me of fighter pilots who would distinguish themselves from the heavy pilots by creasing their hats a certain way.
There's an ex LRRP who has written some info about his experience and he says he was from the 71st when he went to Recondo School but he laters refers to the LRRPs as Ranger-LRRPs.

I agree with Stalker and the recruiting office being a good way to get the kids on the right path. There was a reason that troubled kids used to get sent to Military Schools.
But yeah, Stalker was a kid in a rough neighborhood doing what he had to to survive and the Army gave him direction.

Troynos, if you would like - and I'm only offering - I could try to look at the Barrel Roll stuff and see what we can do. It may take me a little while, because I'm about to have to run some errands for work. But I would be glad to look at it, and work up one of my long file card bios if you like. I'm only offering if you would like some help.
I understand what you're trying to do. Barrel Roll is a great character, but it's hard to mesh "Air Force Fighter Pilot" with "Airborne Ranger Sniper" Officer don't become enlisted. The DOD has regulations against that sort of thing... I think I can come up with something, though, that will pay homage to both. I do think his primary focus should be as an air inserted, Airborne Ranger Sniper. As a Navy SEAL? I don't know about that.

Here's an interesting excerpt:
The men of the 199th became known as "Redcatchers". The 199th [Light Infantry Brigade] realized its need, and on Dec 20, 1967 formed the 71st Infantry Detachment (Long Range Patrol). The 61 men who made up the 71st did not just appear out of thin air. They were chosen by General Forbes from the ranks of Company F, 51st Infantry. Soon the 71st was up and operational, and within a month, doing recon work in the Long Binh, Binh Hoa area. In mid July of 1970 the Redcatcher Rangers were moved to Fire Supportbase Mace, near Gia Ray in Binh Tuy province. I guess the average class size started out at about 65. That gives you some idea of the washout rate. I don't remember how large our class was when it started out. The 39 men who graduated were made up of 7 Marines from the 3rd Marine division, 2 men from the 4th Infantry, 2 from the 51st Infantry, 2 from the 25th Infantry, 6 ROK - Koreans, 3 students from 5th Special Forces Group, 3 from the 101St Airborne, 4 from the Americal Division, 2 from the 173rd Airborne, 2 from the 1st Division, 2 from the 9th Division, 2 from the 199th Light Infantry, 1 from the 47th Infantry, and 1 from the 11ACR. |

I think that's a great way to look at Stalker... they certainly did that in Vietnam. They did that through the 70's, and to some extent, they are doing it again today.

I do know that had my father not enlisted in 69 he'd have been stuck in Kalamazoo with nothing for the most part. The military opened a whole new world for him. I doubt he had been out of the state before that. |
