This is a very long thread and the forum's search function is... not great, so forgive me if this was already covered.
What's going on with Steeler's file card in Order of Battle, issue 2? (See attached image and compare to all other versions of the file card.) First quote: So, I know Al Milgrom was an editor at Marvel at this time, so there's some sort of inside joke happening, but does anyone know the story behind it? Second quote: I actually really love the second quote from Hawk. In a short couple of lines it shaped my perception of Hawk, Steeler, and their relationship to each other. In my own class-resentful way, I've always thought of Hawk first and foremost as a man who came from money. I blame a single line on this single page of extra-textual material for 85% percent of that. Rank?: Finally, Steeler sees a significant drop in his pay-grade here, demoted from 0-1 to E-5. Based on what little I know of rank structures, this seems like a corrective measure, not only because an 0-1 rank would place him only second to Hawk among the O13, but also because it is a more likely rank for a tank commander. (On this last point, I may be very wrong.) The correction does not appear to have stuck, however, as he is once again an 0-1 with his next official figure release in 2004. He is then briefly bumped up to 0-2 in 2007 before dropping back down to 0-1 in 2008. Since then, he has remained an 0-1. |

The rank thing was probably a mistake that was corrected. As you said, an E-5 wouldn't be a tank commander. You'd have to be some sort of officer to get that role.
As for the change between O-1 and O-2, he may have been demoted at some point. In reality, the 2007 filecard was likely a mistake, but in comic canon, he was probably promoted and then demoted for some unexplained reason. |

The US Army ranking system used to have linear sergeant and specialist ranks so an SP-5 I believe would be equivalent to a sergeant (both an E-5) but the sergeant would have command responsibilities. |

I think the promotion to O-2 is automatic after 2 years, and by 7 years you should make Captain. But how Hawk is even in charge of a special forces unit with an Artillery background really never made sense. Unless GIJoe is really meant a a way to funnel unspent DOD funding. I can't tell you how many times government end of fiscal year funds come to the IT department, because you can only buy so many pencils.
To me GIJoe is a proving grounds for high tech equipment the government is testing. Hawk figured out how to take advantage of the system. That probably required him to take a chance on certain individuals.

When Larry was given the comic, he wrote dossiers for each character (and continued to do so) so he could keep the characters backstories and personalities straight in his head and these became the basis for the file cards. The dossiers for at least the OG-13 had Psych Profiles (some were added to the file cards) and was a bit of an in joke as he added Marvel editorial staff and other bullpen workers to the lore by making them Psychiatrists attached to the US Army Medical Command. That's why there were several discrepancies, because Hama orginally saw Steeler as a NCO and Hawk was a West Point drop out which is why he had a SP-5 rank but Hasbro changed things which is why sometimes the file cards don't make sense and even the characters appearance don't make sense. Like Repeater has a Ranger tab on his hat but Marine jump wings etc. Quite a few of the dossiers are in the public domain https://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-j...ers-1980s.html |

Ty, do you know what happen to the post that had those Psychological evaluations?
Thought they were in this thread, but alas I can't find them..... Quote:
I suspect that the Marvel Order of Battle took most of its information from Larry Hama's dossiers NOT the file cards.

So in the Classified skills ranking system I was glancing at Cover Girl's stats on gijoe.com
She gets: (Role) Tanker - 4 (Gear) Light Weapons - 2 (Skill) Mechanical Engineering - 4 (Mastery) Weapons Development - 2 1 actually represents an elite proficiency, while 4 is a complete mastery of it. Destro should hire her. Destro's stats as a comparison: (Role) Mechanical Engineering - 4 (Gear) Light Weapons - 1 (Skill) Black Market - 3 (Mastery) Weapons Development - 4 The differences is Destro is not an actual solider who works in a Moter pool/drives a tank. He's a black market arms dealer and someone who devotes his time to future war tech. Scrap-Iron as one last compare: (Role) Ordnance Specialist - 4 (Gear) Launcher - 4 (Skill) Anti-Armor - 3 (Mastery) Weapons Development - 2 |

So since this thread is nearly 3k pages long, forgive me if anything I'm about to mention has been stated or restated a bunch of times, but I was rereading the first few pages and it got me thinking about the number of Joes who have appeared from different states, so I noted everything from 82-94 down and noticed a few interesting things:
Despite the glut of Joes from Rhode Island in comparison to its size, there was a 5-year period where Ace was the only Rhode Islander on the team. Repeater and Skystriker opened the floodgates in 1988, with another 12 Joes following them in the next 6 years, often times including multiple members of subteams. Chicago, New York City (counting the Joes from Brooklyn and Queens), and Providence are tied for the most Joes coming from their city, with 7 each. Colorado had the longest wait between Joes, with Hawk in 82 and Mace in 93 both being from Denver. The next longest was a tie between my home state of Pennsylvania, with Steeler in 82 and Windmill in 88, Michigan, with Stalker also in 82 and then Shockwave, also in 88, and Wyoming, with Outback in 87 and Robo-Joe in 93. There were never any Joes from Delaware or South Dakota. California is tied with Rhode Island for the highest number of Joes (15 each). Hope any of this trivia is interesting. |
