In the TV show The Unit, they're (basically) Delta Force, but are covered as the 303rd Logistics Studies Group and are supposedly exactly that, desk-bound logistics guys. There's an episode in which one of the team is dating a civilian woman, who's father is ex-Army and knows the Colonel commanding The Unit. She likes the fact that Hector is a desk weenie never to see combat, but when he meets her father, he ridicules Hector for being a weenie. He goes to see the Colonel to push for the guy to do more. The Colonel tells him to stand down and he can't discuss Hector's career. When the father pushes, the colonel repeats that he can't discuss it and to back off. The father gets the message, and when he sees Hector again, is super nice and friendly. This naturally sets off the girlfriend's Spider sense and she forces Hector to admit he's no desk weenie and they break it off because she hates the fact he didn't tell the truth and that he's going on dangerous missions all the time. A recurring plot element is also about the wives of the Unit soldiers having to lie to other family members and friends about their husbands' work. When one Operator dies on a mission, his partner (not wife, they weren't married yet), is told he died in a 'training accident', which she knows is absolute bull.
I suspect there's a lot of truth to this. Anyone living near a base like Bragg or Stirling Lines though, is going to know or at least suspect that anyone in the Army living near there is a BMF in SOF. |

I never watched the Unit. I totally should. This scenario sounds like EXACTLY what I pictured in my head. I guess this might be what Hama was going for with the Chaplain's Motorpool at Fort Wadworths as a cover unit.

you totally should. It's a good show. Although it does get a bit fanciful toward the end, shall we say.

Every SEAL and Force Recon Marine I ever interacted with was pretty straightforward about being Special Forces. Mission details is obviously a different thing.

That all makes sense in the sense of good HouseKeeping, but at some point it probably has to come up for the Delta Guys, for example, when guys are discussing military service with say a neighbor who is also military. I mean do they have a cover they use? Maybe it just doesn't come up. Or Servicemen know when not to ask any, and civilians have no idea. Thanks Tyroc
Like Cap mentioned, in the TV show the Unit, they had a unit cover identity. ex-Delta operator Eric Haney said as much in his book "Inside Delta Force". Then again, he was also the co-creator and one of the executive producers of the Unit. In regards to foreign exchanges and the like, someone I know is an Ex-Marine Recon who joined the Commandos and is now working in private security. He said that when he did his exchange with the SASR (8 months) he was paid by his parent unit (Force Recon) and was addressed by his USMC rank. He completed the SASR selection too but because of his experience and rank, he did an abbreviated version of it. I think he joined a selection class with a bunch of medical rollbacks ( guys who got injured or sick but were recognized as being worthy of continuing selection, so they weren't returned to their unit) so he only had to do like the last 2-3 weeks as opposed to doing it from the start. |

The Unit is a PHENOMENAL show and well worth watching. I loved it. For awhile I even made some 3 3/4 versions of a couple of them, though I think I turned them into other people eventually.
The reason I go with the idea that they just completely erase their civilian IDs goes into the sci-fi nature of the Joe-verse. Cobra has so much hi tech gear at their disposal that the only way to be safe would be to erase sensitive data. Not hide behind firewalls; erase. People selected for the Joes either have no family or no close family. They essentially agree to leave their lives behind, and be declared MIA or KIA. There is technology available even today that can obscure faces in cameras; Joes employ something similar that makes them almost impossible to capture through digital photography. This covers them against any accidental press on site or camera phones if they operate in areas with civilians. In todays climate it would be impossible for a team to not be known about or seen on some level, especially given the resources and scale of Cobra. So people knows there is a team called GI joe, but no one knows who is on it outside of Flagg and Hawk. And if by some miracle either of them got captured and interrogated, even if they gave up the other Joes names, there are no records ting them back to anyone anyway. I spend way to much time thinking about this stuff.

During the Marvel G.I.Joe Series there was one issue where Snake Eyes, Baroness and Destro were in Vietnam all at the same time. I think Snake Eyes was chasing somebody that had shot a fellow soldier. The Baroness, before she was the Baroness, was with her brother meeting with a couple of guys that her brother shouldn`t have trusted. A young Destro was with his father, who was doing some business. They would all wind up in the same warehouse, where the two bad guys shot the Baroness`s brother, Snake Eyes would then shoot the two bad guys. The Baroness would think that Snake Eyes had shot her brother and Destro`s father would tell the police that Snake Eyes didn`t. Now wouldn`t it be interesting if Snake Eyes, The Baroness and Destro were all close to the same age?

Aren't they? I assume Baroness and Destro are and Snake-Eyes must be like 5 years older. So guessing it was like 1972 and they were 17 and 22 respectively. Now they are 66 and 71.

Wouldn`t it be interesting if Snake Eyes, with Scarlett, could sit down with the Baroness and Destro and talk. Snake Eyes and the Baroness might never become friends, but the Baroness might be less bitter.

There's no reason a regular SEAL or Recon Marine would have to hide the specialty other than PERSEC. Also, their uniform badges are a bit obvious with SEALs and few Marines outside of Recon would have jump wings and dive bubbles. Though I would hope they'd avoid broadcasting who they are if they aren't asked directly. Don said people would have to ask him a few times before he'd say he was a SEAL. "I was in the military." "I was in the Navy" "I was a diver." "I was a SEAL" Delta/CAG or SEAL Team6/DEVGRU are a little different since for the longest time those units were not supposed to officially exist.
