Not file cards, per se, but I recently reread DDP's G.I. JOE: Battle Files and many of the JOEs were mentioned as having gone to Ft. Benning. Is this some sort of prerequisite for Special Forces or Ranger training? (I'm assuming most of the JOEs are Special Forces or Ranger qualified.)

Another thing I'm wondering about is the 95th and 96th Civil Affairs Brigade. A lot of JOEs, like Tollbooth, would be perfect for this, but it the 95th wasn't reinstated until 2007 (and the 96th is a subdivision of that). I see Tollbooth as Special Forces, so what was the equivalent back in the '80s?

I think the main difference with the early 80's is that OSUT was not a thing (I believe) so they would go to basic then possibly somewhere else for AIT. I do not know if Airborne training would have been required before being assigned to a unit on jump status though. Another thing I am uncertain of is if the 101st was considered a jump ready unit back then as well (they are not nowadays). If they were this would give another option for a unit that the new soldier could potentially be assigned to.
Im not sure when OSUT was officially implemented. It was first tested in 1975 and I know that OSUT has been around at least since 1991. It may have been officially established in the 80s but in phases so not everyone went through OSUT. I’m still looking for a link. |

During the Vietnam War the 101st was designated an air mobile unit (and still is) so Jump school wouldn’t have been required. Units that require certain MOS to have airborne training, such as infantryman in the 82nd or Special Forces, however, would typically require those soldiers to attend the 3-week course after AIT and before reaching the unit. Of course if you washed out, you’d probably get reassigned. There may be exceptions but that’s generally how it worked.

So, I'm sure someone's caught this by now, but Wild Bill is a "Lt." according to the sticker sheets that came with his helicopters (the Dragonfly and Locust XH-1).

Another thing I'm wondering about: if you have 3 platoons "Alpha," "Beta," etc.), can one of those be an artillery unit or a tank unit? Or would they get named something else? The reason I ask is that G.I. JOE is probably brigade-sized at this point (especially with the Greenshirts and Steel Brigade soldiers).
