Big Ben's FSS filecard has BIG BEN joined the British Army's Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 PARA).

Yeah, but I'm really curious when he was in West Germany. Was it during the Cold War? Any guesses?

OG Big Ben from 1991, yes definitely in the 1980s. I would imagine a few years with the Paras in the 1970s, joined the PF in the early 1980s, then went to LRRP school in about 1984, joined the SAS regiment in 1987 or so, attached to GI Joe in 1991.

I tend to put Big Ben with my artic Joes, because he seems to wear cold weather gear more than anything. Plus, he's so tough. What I always hated about the comics is that the Arctic characters were hardly ever used, but here in the United States half of the country is buried under snow or severe icy conditions for 6 months in the winter. Technically, Snow Job, Big Ben, Iceberg, etc. would be often busier than the regular Joes at that time of year. In many places, like Minnesota or Montana, they might be the only soldiers on the team with the right gear and equipment to tackle Cobra!

I know what you mean, sean. But it always bugged me there was only one proper Desert trooper when there's deserts in the US!

Well, I know they have the desert patrol now. I just assume that many Joes are "experts" / highly-trained to take over for Dusty in case he's incapacitated. But, yeah, one of the latest desert missions that Hama wrote didn't even use Dusty! Torpedo led the mission and Longshot v1 was part of the 4-man squad. Weird.

Who has Desert training on the Joes?
Dusty, Skidmark, Taurus, Crankcase, DUke, Desert Paratroop Flint, Spearhead, Rock'n'Roll, Recoil, Ambush, Grid-Iron, and Repeater are obvious fits. but not sure what is in the way of official training.

I know Snake Eyes did, according to his 1st file card iirc... And any JOE with the Desert Patrol would have to, right?

So in my opinion all Joes operate in any environment (otherwise their use would be very limited). A good example is a five man team of Stalker, Dusty, Recoil, Spirit and Snow Job sent to some place in the middle east to take down a HVT. Maybe the team is dropped via helicopter in the desert and needs to patrol to the target. While Stalker is the team leader he defers all aspects to surviving in a desert to Dusty as he is the SME in this environment. Dusty will know which plants may be edible and which types of insects to avoid. Once they are at their mission objective Spirit and Snow Job will be the sniper team to take out the HVT while the other three provide security. Snow Job's skill as a sniper will be completely wasted if he sat in some frozen tundra waiting all day for targets to appear (when the enemy may not even operate in such environments for long periods of time). I look at the Joes as similar to SEALs. Most SEAL missions are not water based but land based. Their talents would be wasted if they waited their entire time for water-based missions. In the example of the desert mission mentioned in the comics with Torpedo in the lead, Dusty may have been on another mission at the time and was not available. |
