Okay so after having a few pages of my fanfic written that shows the creation of the Joe team utilizing the Original 13 I am thinking of changing directions....again. I blame Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I haven't played a video game in years (still have a PS2 I bought in 2001) but with kids have not had time to delve into them. So I was watching videos on Youtube about MGS5 and it intrigued me. I feel it is very similar to G.I.Joe in the combination of military and sci-fi that is involved. Big Boss reminds me of Joe Colton and their Mother Base on the game makes me think of the Tactical Battle Platform. The game is based in 1984 but utilizes technology that is more "futuristic" (much like G.I.Joe).
So now I am thinking of writing background stories of Colton in his early years and making the Joe team in the early 80's instead of making them current like my initial thought. Or maybe write two parallel stories, one 80's and one modern. Although with as little time as I have these days I find that feat overwhelming. lol |

I say pick one. Or what I wish Joe would have done, is say start in the 80s, and progress over the years. Replacing characters as you go. At some point Lt. Falcon becomes Colonel Falcon. At the same time guys like Flint and Duke would almost assuredly move to SAD operatives. Time in grade and other such realities such as age would most likely have an effect. With all that training, expertise, and knowledge CIA would be calling the minute they put in their discharge papers. How that could play out might be a cool story in and of itself. This way you can keep relevant characters in the mix while adhering to a realistic timeline. Depending on how long you do it for. Some guys might even retire to start PMC businesses as well.

I will definitely give it a more realistic flavor to my fanfic. Joes will retire, get moved to other units, die, etc. It is highly unrealistic for an officer like Hawk to lead a unit for 12 years (82-94). Most of the officers in the Joe team would have been transferred to other units as well and probably would not have served for more than 2-4 years. I was thinking of MGS5 (and Metal Gear in general) as Big Boss started out as serving in the U.S military but then goes on to create a PMC. I thought maybe Colton can be similar in that vein, he is a Special Forces Officer during the Vietnam War then maybe goes on to start the G.I.Joe team. After his military career is over he goes on to create a PMC (maybe called Steel Brigade?). The only thing I would not want to happen is for the Joe team to start out as a US military unit then all of the Joes follow Colton to a PMC. So I am trying how best to approach this. Maybe the Joe team is in fact just a PMC to begin with?

So watching a Vietnam War series and thinking of which Joes actually served in Vietnam. Here is what I have so far:
Snake-Eyes (LRRP) Stalker (LRRP) Breaker (Project Gamma) Wild Bill (LRRP) Duke (Special Forces) Spirit Leatherneck (1st Recon Battalion) Possible: Mutt Recondo Shipwreck Keel-Haul Anyone else? My understanding is LRRP members had to go through Ranger School first (or be on the list to attend). I also understand that all LRRP groups were integrated into the 75th Infantry Regiment (the predecessor to the 75th Ranger Regiment) so that would mean Stalker, Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow would have been assigned to that unit during their time with the LRRP's (provided you go with 1971 as the year of the infamous ambush). Now what about Recondo School? I understand that was taught by Special Forces members. The same with the Jungle Warfare School during that time, which was taught by the 7th Special Forces Group. Does that mean Recondo is officially Special Forces because he was a cadre member? I think we discuss this before but cannot remember the outcome. |

Shipwreck and Keel-Haul and Payload all served.
Colton, Claymore also Gung-Ho, and Torpedo would seem like likely Vietnam vets along with Recondo and Mutt.

If you take the UK Action Force stuff into account;
Beach Head served in Vietnam with the NZ SAS according to his Action Force profile; Scarlett served in Vietnam attached to Special Forces according to her Action Force profile; Outback served in Vietnam with the Australian SASR according to his profile; Gung Ho was definitely in Vietnam, there was an Action Force story about his unit there, I think it was in an Annual; Spirit served in the Central Highlands with the Montagnards and was part of a SF / CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Volunteer Group)team Also due to his age, I think we can assume Repeater too (20 years in and never went past E6) Hope it helps |

Some are but many are not. Like the ones Tryoc mentioned. Outback is Australian, as is Recondo. Beachhead as a Kiwi. Gung-Ho I think is mostly the same I think. Born in New Orleans. Not sure about Roadblock before and after the move from Red Shadows to Cobra.
